  1. Although I am loath to side with the little bastards, I must do so in this case. The school overstepped it's bounds by punishing the children for what they did off school grounds. Examples such as teachers "stepping in" in cases of abuse, etc only proves that educators are constantly going beyond their jurisdiction. If there is reason to suspect abuse, drug use, theft, whatever, then the teacher/administrator should be contacting proper authorities, aka police, social services. Teachers are not authorities at 3:05pm. They are citizens and have no more power than the kids themselves. If these overgrown babysitters want to get involved, do it by legal channels. If they feel their reputations are damaged by these kids, find recourse through legal channels. Whoever posted the example of the pension scenario: The person that withholds pension payments due to an unrelated incident involving a dog would, at the least, be subject to review and, in all likelihood, be reprimanded or terminated. And rightfully so. If you continue down this thought path, then I should be able to fire one of my employees because I want to date his girlfriend and he won't let me. It is abuse of authority and I would be in front of the Labour Board in a heartbeat. The poor, poor, little teacher-sitters should buck-up and either sue the families involved or shut up. They are due no respect because they earn no respect. They ARE civil servants, and should only be treated with enough respect to satisfy school conduct policies. Period. Once off school property and off school hours (including field trips, etc) I couldn't care less if people ignored them all together. Their overbloated salaries should be enough to help them find solace. Want respect? Get a job that actually earns it. Until then, quit exerting authority that you don't have.
  2. What? Are they doing another after-school special on Trudeau?
  3. And, of course, to make sure that Sierra Club members have fuel for their VW Microbuses so they can get to the protest.
  4. ...and John Creten promised to get rid of the GST. Guess what? He lied. Or is that changed his mind? Nothing new here, so what's the problem Norman?
  5. I disagree. As with most things, the closer to the source the more effective. Kids these days barely react to authority. Parents seem to be the last bastion of discipline, and being closest to the little criminals, are the most effective. This is not a question of whether or not "detention" is sufficient reprimand for the Facebook incidents. I think it is not even close to sufficient. Let me tell you that if I was served notice of legal action because my kid did this, "suspension of internet" would be the least of his worries. There is nothing the school could do that would come close to what I would do. It actually suprises me that there hasn't been some human rights advocacy group jumping to the defence of the kids involved. The treatment of criminal acts by youth in this country is not allowed to be punitive...only rehabilitative. The defamitive/slanderous nature of these acts should be dealt with through the proper channels. Legal channels. What the school did was essentially "ground" the little brats and that alone is not nearly harsh enough.
  6. Whether or not the insults vanish is immaterial. The act of typing in those comments did not occur while the child was a student. (I'm making an assumption here) The kids typed the (possibly) slanderous remarks on their own time, and therefore are not accessible to the school administration. The problem here may be that no one, to my knowledge, has defined in school. In my opinion, students are not students once they leave school property. The application of the Safe Schools Act does not, and cannot, include actions taken once out of the jurisdiction of the school administration. Off school property (etc as per my definition in my last post), a teacher ceases to be a teacher and simply becomes a citizen with no administrative power. If I were the teachers in question, I would sue the ass off the kids' parents. That would send a message to all the little bastards, and would still be easy enough to drop the case before it went to court. Probably the best $35 filing fee I can think of.
  7. http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/Source/...00/S00012_e.htm Are students in schools or not in schools? When is a student no longer a student? When they were writing in Facebook, they were purportedly not IN SCHOOL. If they were physically in school, then yes, the school officials would have grounds for action. If they were not physically in school (in school defined as on school property, on a school trip, on a school bus, etc), then the administration has no grounds other than legal action by the affected teachers.
  8. Would they drop enough for us to meet Kyoto? All hail Kyoto!!! We should most certainly be meeting these targets. By tomorrow.
  9. Don't you mean "turban myths"? True, except that if the school has too many students, the Catholic ones receive priority over non-Catholics. But not all?
  10. Point #1 - Figleaf has stated the case perfectly, so there is no need to add to it further. Teachers and administrators have a legal avenue available. If they choose not to use it...that's their CHOICE. Point #2 - If you want to fix the state school system, start by disbanding the unions. Quit protecting the lazy and stupid and you will see the cream rise to the top. The idiot teachers will soon be run off, or teaching in a place where their performance isn't really a consideration anyway.
  11. Hey meathead, look up our previous posts. I'm not a head hunter, I'm a Director with a large O&G service group. But I'm sure a genius like you already knew that. ...and for another thing...most people on this board know that I am no fan of immigration. Period. However, if I have to choose between someone who can use proper grammar and has basic spelling skills and someone who "no need school-already speak gooder english!", I'll take the former every time. Immigrant or not. Ever wonder why??? You state that you don't bother with grammar and spelling, and then you say you want to consult. To whom would you like to consult? A fifth grade language arts class? Start with becoming more professional and quit blaming the world's problems on immigration. I can't believe that I'm coming in on the side of immigrants (being a xenophobe and all), but would you grow up please?
  12. I think I found what Mikedavid has been complaining about (except for the taking of Canadian jobs part), and I thought I would post it. It actually makes quite a lot of sense to me, and demonstrates the problem with part of the Canadian legal/immigration system. To note: This was emailed to me and I do not know the source. Is this how people are viewing the immigration system and is this the source of their frustration? I believe it is.
  13. I don't like multiculturalism. It takes jobs from Canadians. You know, white Canadians. Bad. My question is should we continue to allow rampant, unchecked immigration from ANY country, be it questionable or not? That question opens a whole host of other questions regarding shrinking birth rates, etc... But the one thing that I truly want to know, MikeDavid, is this: You once challenged me to find give you a job for $55,000/year as a new hire computer genius. I was just about to when I reread your OP, and wondered why I would pay that much for someone who can neither spell, nor operate spell-check. Should I still hire you for my Critical Systems Integration Team, and if I don't, is it the fault of the immigrant who can spell? Just wondering.
  14. margrace, the autobiography was unnecessary.
  15. This thread is nothing but the Coffee Crisp of posts (It makes a nice, light...). Thanks for the levity.
  16. Are you like Poly's illegitimate half-brother? Have you ever heard of a guy called Newton? Once upon a time, there were these really smart guys called scientists. Scientists set about to prove things by using other things called facts. One of the things they proved with these so-called facts was that you neither create nor destroy matter, only change it. Another crazy thing they proved with facts was that you cannot build a magical perpetual motion machine; it takes energy to make energy. Zero cumulative pollution energy generation is impossible. That, too, was proven using facts. Did you read the thread on banks controlling the universe? It's really cool, and some other people like you hang out there.
  17. You are Jane Stewart, right? Waster of other people's money, proponent of crooked Liberal values, defender of the faith. Right?
  18. Let's get real for a moment. Kwebek couldn't shop at Wal-Mart without government assistance. Try going twelve months without equalization, and then feel free to talk about "without government assistance". Kwebek has been a kept province since the beginning of time, and the way it is treated by the fed's it always will be. Kick them the hell out of Canada, and see whether they want to maintain their "holier than thou" attitude. Just for the record, when someone is anti-Kwebek, they are usually anti-billingual and vice versa. Canadians in general have had enough of this spoiled brat syndrome and more than enough of this shove-it-down-your-throat dual language BS. This country is not billingual, only one province is. And barely at that. There is absolutely no need for a second (dead) language in this country. The argument that "we need to be billingual because the federal language policies say so" goes hand in hand with "we need federal language policies because we're billingual". It's a circular argument that has no reasoning behind it. It's simply a "let's make a rule, because we need more rules" ploy.
  19. Please stop using big words. I'm having trouble following along.
  20. The feds shouldn't be investing in an offshore rig at all. If they want to create an atmosphere where investors favor the idea, fine. But they shouldn't be doing any private investing with my money. Alberta gets screwed. Always has and always will. Interestingly enough (or maybe not), I have only begun to fully endorse seperation in the last year. Before that time, I squealed a bit over a beer about how we should go it alone, but that was about it. This CPC was my last hope at saving this almost-country, but as I feared even then, it is a huge waste of time and money to continue with this charade. Try sitting in a lounge or resturaunt in this province following another "Give Kwebek a Handout" announcement. The seperatist aire is amazingly strong, and although lots of people think that the feeling is restricted to a miniscule minority they are dead wrong. Hell, Geoffrey was an Alberta Nationalist until recently. If a bright, educated, young man can be soured on federalism that quickly, imagine how the rest of us "uneducated rednecks" are.
  21. Oil and gas subsidies are non-existent? Oil and gas subsidies are every bit as bad. However, the product of O&G is required in this country. It is a necessity, Bomb's products are not. Planes, trains, and street cars? Accessible from other places and therefore not deserving of government subsidies. Jet-Ski watercraft? Snowmobiles? Not really in the "necessary" column either. But it is a Kwebek-based business and therefore is fed money intravenously from Ottawa. If O&G go away, we all have major problems. When business was slow in the early 80's (due to federal intervention), the O&G sector would not have recovered unless there was more intervention. If Bomb goes out of business, someone won't be able to hit that perfect powder at Blue Ridge. Does this make me a hypocritical seperatist, or a seperatist hypocrite?
  22. I wonder how much of my tax money it cost to produce those commercials? Oh well, if they were too expensive, the feds will just give Bomb another billion or two in tax money and some more loan guarantees.
  23. Let's put it this way. Golfing is a marketable skill in Estevan, especially when you hold the position of rep. The French is of no use, but according to your belief, that makes no difference. French would win.
  24. Name a politician who isn't just concerned about Canada. Maybe Steve is just running into what most of us do from time to time. Lofty goals that appear to be so simple...if they would just listen...but then you fight and scrap and finally make it there...and guess what? It's not so simple, those lofty goals. There's all these other issues that you hadn't counted on. But, damn, I just want to do this one thing and then the country will finally be good for everyone. Sorry, big guy, it's not that easy. Maybe Steve is still a believer...and that's what makes him so ineffective. Guys like Trudeau and Chretien probably started out the same way...and then finally gave in and said...screw it, if I can't make it what I thought it should be, I'll just take as much of it as I can for myself. It's too bad. Although I had zero respect for Trudeau and Chretien, maybe their worlds wouldn't have been so bad. This country would never have allowed it though, too much infighting amongst it's own citizens. Too far apart in physical distance and ideology. The one united Canada that all these politicians envision can never happen. This board is a perfect example of why it can't.
  25. I know, I know. Years ago, when I was in the car business, we used to have to write "Delivered at the Enoch Reserve" on every bill of sale to an Indian. It was the only way they didn't have to pay tax. How many did the dealership deliver to the reserve...let's see...5+6, carry the one...zero. The "delivered at reserve" is a sham. I doubt there has ever been a dollars worth of product actually delivered at reserve. It's a kinky loophole, and Indians make the most of it. The Indians that work for me (the company) that live on reserve earn 100% of their income off reserve, but still pay zero income tax. It's the Canadian way of the world. Don't tax Indians. They don't like it.
