  1. Do you think Albertans would be willing to accept the United States Constitution if Alberta became a state, with its built‑in safeguards against tyranny? Among those safeguards, the Second Amendment is a prominent one—and I get the feeling that most Canadians oppose it. But the problem with the Second Amendment is that its meaning has been distorted by both the left and the right, often through exaggeration. Liberals tend to believe that anyone has a right to own weapons—and everyone does—but the right doesn’t believe that everyone should have unrestricted access. In fact, conservatives generally think certain people should be under heavier restrictions than others, such as individuals with violent histories or felonies. They also support policies like stop‑and‑frisk, which has shown some effectiveness in high‑crime neighborhoods. Liberals, on the other hand, are often more willing to give the federal government powers beyond what the Constitution grants. Conservatives believe that states have the right to do anything they want as long as they don’t directly violate an amendment or a constitutional provision.
  2. Does Alberta’s desire to break away from Canada have anything to do with the economy or the way the national government is running the country? Please excuse an American’s ignorance of Canada’s politics.
  3. I believe AI will have a profound impact on productivity. It should make almost all goods much cheaper, but the other side of the coin is that it’s also going to eliminate a lot of jobs. So we may end up with a future where we have a completely new way of doing things, because I don’t see how we can avoid it. It’s coming, and I don’t think anything can stop it.
  4. As I said, I’m new here, but I’m not new to discussion boards or to the study of the federal government. A federation is both an advantage and a danger. In my opinion, it’s dangerous because there is always a tendency for a federation to drift toward an empire. Politicians love power, and they always want more of it. Our founders were wise enough to design a system that makes it very difficult for any one person to accumulate enough power to become a tyrant. But that system depends on politicians respecting and adhering to the safeguards that were put in place—and on the people holding them to it. So that is my introduction here. I’m the kind of poster who does not use insults or ridicule. I try to respect everyone’s opinion—whether I agree with it or not, whether I consider it serious or not—because in a democracy, everyone has the right to say what they think. They do not have the right to expect me to agree, but they do have the right to express their views. And they don’t always need evidence unless they are presenting something as a fact rather than as an opinion.
