Do you think Albertans would be willing to accept the United States Constitution if Alberta became a state, with its built‑in safeguards against tyranny? Among those safeguards, the Second Amendment is a prominent one—and I get the feeling that most Canadians oppose it.
But the problem with the Second Amendment is that its meaning has been distorted by both the left and the right, often through exaggeration. Liberals tend to believe that anyone has a right to own weapons—and everyone does—but the right doesn’t believe that everyone should have unrestricted access. In fact, conservatives generally think certain people should be under heavier restrictions than others, such as individuals with violent histories or felonies. They also support policies like stop‑and‑frisk, which has shown some effectiveness in high‑crime neighborhoods.
Liberals, on the other hand, are often more willing to give the federal government powers beyond what the Constitution grants. Conservatives believe that states have the right to do anything they want as long as they don’t directly violate an amendment or a constitutional provision.
