  1. There are many reports on the topic. You are quoting the worst case scenario. Other analysis have concluded that high value sectors like auto have not been impacted by the dollar much (it is the competition which is killing jobs in Canada and in the US).

Actually, the situation gets worse as production goes up and costs remain externalized. So what we're seeing so far is the best case scenario. Give it 5-6 years and we may not have a manufacturing sector anymore.

  2. I'd want reliable, ethical witnesses there, like say, David Suzuki and Thomas Mulcair to be sure the water came from those ponds, straight out of the pond, into the glass and down his throat.

Because we know Oliver and the Conservatives cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

I think Oliver already regrets the comment. Today's QP will be very interesting.

  3. Just as an aside re: the opposition strategy.

I think the best thing they can do is to continuously introduce a set of economic policy bills that they know will get passed in the house. This is a fundamentally better (and more long-term) strategy that could defeat the Tories than the existing wedge-issue game they are playing right now.

It rids them of the divisive moniker and makes them look like better stewards of economic policy than the Conservatives.

  4. At the top of a list of topics released in a lengthy communique after the meeting Tuesday was progress on Redford's plan for a Canadian Energy Strategy - a "strategic, forward-thinking plan for sustainable energy management and development that will advance the common goal of ensuring that Canada is a recognized leader in sustainable and secure energy production, supply and transportation including east-west and northern electricity transmission."

    Well this is a start.

It looks like we're going to have a long-term national discussion on how to properly develop the oilsands.

  5. How long would that last? One major issue that pits ROC vs Quebec and the NDP is screwed, choose Quebec lose the rest, chose the other provinces lose Quebec.

And all those things that are supposedly pushing people to the NDP camp all depend on the context at the time, robocalls won't matter if the people are happy with the state of the country, one event and F-35's won't matter. If the Conservatives are running the country well, the budget is balanced on election year, the swing vote just might stick with the Conservatives.

That's why Mulcair is making his attack early, on the economic side of things.

The NDP spin will be to convince Canadians that Conservative economic policy is short-lived and unsustainable.
