1/3 is significant. What is required now is the cost benefit analysis.
I agree.
It would be the fiscally conservative thing to do.
-
Depends who he's up against.
I don't think Adam Vaughan will be appealing to the masses in Toronto.
Karen Stintz has a shot but if Vaughan is in there too they'll split the vote.
I thought Stintz was conservative.

There are many reports on the topic. You are quoting the worst case scenario. Other analysis have concluded that high value sectors like auto have not been impacted by the dollar much (it is the competition which is killing jobs in Canada and in the US).
Actually, the situation gets worse as production goes up and costs remain externalized. So what we're seeing so far is the best case scenario. Give it 5-6 years and we may not have a manufacturing sector anymore.
-
is Greece... your Harper Conservative reference bar?
If it's not Harper, it's Greece, so Mulcair must be Greece.
Greece is the new WMD.
-
I wouldn't say that 1/3 of manufacturing job losses is a minor effect. The report itself suggests things the govt should be doing. Just that setting your hair on fire isn't one of them.
And even if it is minor right now, it's pretty obvious that the situation will become amplified if we focus entirely on resource extraction.

I'd want reliable, ethical witnesses there, like say, David Suzuki and Thomas Mulcair to be sure the water came from those ponds, straight out of the pond, into the glass and down his throat.
Because we know Oliver and the Conservatives cannot be trusted to tell the truth.
I think Oliver already regrets the comment. Today's QP will be very interesting.
-
That's assuming he can be bothered to show up for work.
That's assuming he can walk.
But seriously, he's toast next election.
-
Was listening to Power and Politics last night, and it sounds like Mulcair is being vindicated. The point ultimately rests that a case of dutch disease exists. The degree of which is what is now to be determined.

Our Debt to GDP ratio is nowhere near Greece.
/thread.

If you like the asian ladies .. i suggest going ALL the way west to Vancouver .. lots of yummy there.
Who can disagree with that.
-
I'd say that Joe Oliver comments are radical.
You never know.
If he decides to put his money where his mouth is, the PR from taking a drink might be good for the CPC.

Ford's approval rating plummets to 33%.

Just as an aside re: the opposition strategy.
I think the best thing they can do is to continuously introduce a set of economic policy bills that they know will get passed in the house. This is a fundamentally better (and more long-term) strategy that could defeat the Tories than the existing wedge-issue game they are playing right now.
It rids them of the divisive moniker and makes them look like better stewards of economic policy than the Conservatives.

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but it is about the oilsands.
According to Joe Oliver, we'll be cleaning tail ponds so well WE'LL BE ABLE TO DRINK FROM THEM, so no need to enforce environmental regulation.

Wow, thanks for the copy pasta wyly. I'd probably commit a bunch of those in the next few months had I not known.

A National energy strategy, yes.
An agreement with all western provinces to promote sustainable development, not quite.
-
This was being talked about long before Mulcair.
Not to this extent. I think exposure to the issue exploded since Mulcair's dutch disease comments.
-
This should read "Western Provinces decide to promote Buzzwords". Nothing against the West the East is just as bad if not worse but with out action this is just politics.
The irony being that if it wasn't for Mulcair, they wouldn't be scrambling to change their tune.
So much for being divisive.

Thanks....
I do see the reason for that discussion rule: it frames our discussion here and gets things started.
I can see the value in that.
-
The moderators generally like someone to add something to a first post to kick off the discussion.
From the rules:
Oh, I see. I thought we simply weren't able to post entire articles. Okay.. I'll edit something in then.
-
Do you have any discussion to add to this ?
It's a start?
-
What we need is somebody like Tommy Douglas, who had a heart but also knew the value of a dollar.
From a federal perspective I think Mulcair is actually pretty well balanced on the economy and social issues.
-
At the top of a list of topics released in a lengthy communique after the meeting Tuesday was progress on Redford's plan for a Canadian Energy Strategy - a "strategic, forward-thinking plan for sustainable energy management and development that will advance the common goal of ensuring that Canada is a recognized leader in sustainable and secure energy production, supply and transportation including east-west and northern electricity transmission."
Well this is a start.
It looks like we're going to have a long-term national discussion on how to properly develop the oilsands.

How long would that last? One major issue that pits ROC vs Quebec and the NDP is screwed, choose Quebec lose the rest, chose the other provinces lose Quebec.
And all those things that are supposedly pushing people to the NDP camp all depend on the context at the time, robocalls won't matter if the people are happy with the state of the country, one event and F-35's won't matter. If the Conservatives are running the country well, the budget is balanced on election year, the swing vote just might stick with the Conservatives.
That's why Mulcair is making his attack early, on the economic side of things.
The NDP spin will be to convince Canadians that Conservative economic policy is short-lived and unsustainable.

So the Sun posted an article about the land purchase rejection - which is fine.. except they also posted a picture of Ford's back yard.
EDIT: The pic has been removed and replaced with a shot of Ford.
Wow.
