is it... when the 3rd option only helps to continue to split votes keeping a 'united right' Conservative government?
If a 'united right' can be consistently relegated to a minority government, I would keep them split. It has the added benefit of ensuring neither left party veers too far off ideologically.

Ego?
No thanks.
If NDP garner enough support for a majority, a merger is pointless. Hell, if they reduce the CPC to a minority, a merger is also pointless as the two can vote similarly and defeat the minority government anyway.
One thing we do know for sure is that if a leftist party screws up, people have no where to run but to the right if there is a merger.

I think you posted the wrong link... What you posted was what we call an "Editorial" from the "Opinions" section.
The "Author" was an "NDP MP".

Commented on it?
He was Quebec's "sustainable-development minister" and he didn't comment on it. The lack of comment is all that needs to be said.
Not really.
There is more substance to the hypocrisy if the person actually endorsed some hypocritical sentiment. In which case, there is no evidence to suggest that Mulcair would not support polluter pay everywhere it should be enforced - especially since it appears that is part of the NDP agenda.
Conservative pundits and commentators have had to resort to over-simplification and misrepresentation of what NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has said to prevent a serious discussion about how we develop our natural resources in a sustainable manner. They choose to try to pit region against region; when, in truth, there is widespread agreement across the country with the principle of making polluters pay. -
other accounts of this specific Muclair comment show it was given in relation to the jobs issue... with concerns over jobs being shipped out of Canada with a pipeline to the U.S. - shipping raw product rather than refining it within Canada. More pointedly, Muclair has previously raised concerns over the significant level of oil Canada still imports... that (sustainable) efforts should be made to reduce our import levels. Apparently, there are refineries in the east - go figure.
Huh.. So it is more complicated than this 'hypocrisy' Manning would like us to believe.
Why am I not surprised?
I have to agree with Preton Manning a bit. Hydro developments have a lot of environmental impacts but Mulcair is all for them.
Just because he hasn't commented specifically on Hydro yet, does not mean he doesn't endorse polluter pay for that type of energy production. I'm pretty sure the NDP stance is that polluter pay should be enforced in all areas where regulation has been ignored.
It's interesting that the official CPC talking point is to try to divide Canada by playing up Mulcair's "Quebec-ness." Sounds like a losing strategy to me though, so I encourage them to continue.
You have to give them credit for getting some jabs in. Unfortunately for them, these criticisms tend to become dismissed within days.
-
I agree that we should be enforcing polluter pay on all energy endeavors, but just because Mulcair focused primarily on the oilsands, does not mean he would not enforce polluter pay in other areas. He's already mentioned the costs of the shale and fracking business in other parts as well.

Here's the answer..
Mulcair did not meet with reporters Thursday, but in response to claims he wants Canadian taxpayers to pony up money for Europe, he told the House: "That is the type of pure fabulation one resorts to when one does not have any arguments."http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/story/2012/06/08/harper-europe-socialism.html
-
As far as I can tell, he only mentioned that Harper should participate with G20 nations on possible solutions. This could mean as much as just talking to them and providing suggestions.
No mention at all so far about us "bailing out Europe."

Sounds like you're pitting east vs. west with such divisive comments.

How can you misinterpret the bold headline "Stop The US Demand For Canada's Toxic Tarsands"? How about "Stop and/or delay tar sands pipelines and refinery expansions." Maybe you prefer "Greenpeace is calling on oil companies and the Canadian government to stop the tar sands" Either you can't read, or you're in such denial about what these organizations stand for that you can't comprehend the facts.
Expansion != shutting down.
Sierra recently made comments in a similar vein to Mulcair's aspirations to make development sustainable.
-
Spiderfish, none of those environmental organizations actually want the oil sands shut down completely. Most of them don't want pipelines, or development in environmentally sensitive areas, but none have really expressed to completely shut down development.
Read your own links.

A 21K cheque was written to a voter contact organization and looks to constitute elections overspending.
One hopes this is just another unsubstantiated smear campaign coming from Elections Canada.
The allegations of Elections Act violations are listed in the court order compelling Frank Hall, owner of Holinshed Research Group, to produce emails, invoices and other documents related to work he did for Del Mastro. An invoice submitted in a small-claims-court dispute brought by Holinshed against Del Mastro purports to show that Holinshed performed voter identification work as well as get-out-the-vote calls on election day for Del Mastro’s 2008 campaign. The company, once based in Ottawa, now no longer appears operational.

They all want the oilsands shut down?

The effort to stop the exploration in the sands is simply run by a bunch of yes, hippy tree hugging leftist nut-jobs who do not understand how a shovel is used. Yup, Mulcairs type and target audience... the dumb

You and I know that will never happen, but that doesn't stop some of the environmental groups from wishing it so, and doing what they can to make it so.
Which ones?

Tories were aware that the F-35 was completely unaffordable last year.

I can't see it, either.
I tend to upset some of my politico buddies by comparing him to Mitt Romney - but if you look at how he reflects the modern NDP voter, it makes sense. Socialism is not the main dish anymore for this party.
-
Right. No more oil industry No more mining industry. No more forestry industry. Gee, where are we going to get all the welfare money? Because you know that Mulcair will want a huge increase in welfare spending, not to mention a huge increase in transfer payments for Quebec. Maybe from the huge increase in third world immigrants Mulcair will bring in?
I reject the premise of this argument. Mulcair appears to be a fairly moderate and centrist leader. I don't think the extreme measures you're peddling will actually take effect.
-
Even under such unprecedented communist evil as Mulcair, things will truck along as they always do.
-
Where is the proof?
Where does Mulcair get the nerve to make such blanket statements?

Then I wouldn't assume there is no intention to enforce polluter pay, especially in lieu of the fact that this has become the new NDP M.O. since Mulcair mentioned the dutch disease.
