Hmm good points made by Kimmy and Jerry, tho Jerry i must say, the household i grew up in was different. My mother was the matriarch of my nuclear family. She is also a firery tempered, sarcastic feminist and i have been raised in an environment were i've always have support to go on a succeed with what i wanted to do. maybe it isn't the sterotypical views of men and women and our general characteristics, it's probably the envionment. If you are raised in an area where you are encouraged into traditional roles then maybe you will most likely take on those roles. But its also a person's ambition. if you have the drive then women can be very ambitious. And if people think that a woman isn't as great a leader then a man then let me remind you about Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth the I, Indira Gandhi etc.

But there is no life goal difference. Many men and women alike want successful careers, high salaries, families among other things. And the REAL reason why we have a shortage of doctors is a) the high tuition for medical school and the fact that many of them are leaving canada to practice in the United States. Its not becuase women don't want to be careerwomen.

Value of a Fetus. Time to overturn Roe v. Wade?
mona replied to I miss Reagan's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
To clarify the difference: baby: born, outside the womb. fetus; still living in mum's uterus. why we all refer to a fetus baby: sounds cuter. -
hmmm, never saw it that way, to be pro choice but anti abortion. hmm eye opening thank you. Disagree on the other points made but you have a good one there. We should promote more on birthcontrol and the use of condoms etc. however, this is really hard if a young adult comes from a conservative (or catholic ) family because they don't like to talk about sex and the things that come with it.

SatanHarper: you're right this, country is going to the dogs. The conservatives who can't get over the fact that everyone has the right to love! the homosexual community wants to marry is the same reason the heterosexual community does: to tell the world that they love their partner and that they want to spend the rest of their lives with them. I don't see that as a crime. Gay people are humans just like me (I reluctantly say "and you") and it is a human right to love and be loved. Don't take their right to companionship away.

Thanks to everyone so far for the replies. I too wouldnt mind the lefthanded, midget, lesbian eskimo in a wheelchair either lol (I hope i got all of that). However to the remarks made by Eureka and Jerry Seinfeld: I have to take a step back, raised my eyebrows and say "excuse me?". The reason why women are usually forced into balancing it all is because their husbands aren't willing to stay at home, clean the house, cook, chauffeur the kids to soccer, etc. or take care of the baby. So maybe if the men in the world weren't so macho and unwilling to take on more "feminine" roles at home then women could do the longer comutes and such and bring in the big bucks. We don't lack ambition or the want to be successful businesswomen, we just lack the understanding males to take on some of those things like cleaning and such that don't allow us to get farther. I'm not trying to bash men, i'm just trying to point out that most men aren't going to take on those responsibilities.

I think there is nothing wrong with being religious. My problem with religion is that a lot of them are fundementalist, conservative and sexist. The Catholic church, the Mormon Church along with many others encourge young women to play the traditional role of child bearer, cook, maid and to "Go through with your obligations to your husband" Many religions have strayed from the original documents of their faith and have contorted them to fit their own wants. For example, when the bible was first constructed, Emperor Constantine selected the documents that were to go in. The Gospel of Mary Magdeline was completely scraped because some ego-maniac sexist guy said so. also people take it too seriously, the bible was meant to tell a story and only a story, a bigger version of Aesop's fables. face it people, evolution exists, the earth most likely wasn't created in seven days and humans aren't the center of the universe. However, you can point out that if god exists then why couldn't he come up with something so complex as evolution. I think that people say that being gay is bad, but then they say that god loves everyone. Then why wouldn't he love gay people. Why would he create them if he hated them?? This is why i don't worship. I have Faith, but i don't have a religion.

Selling Harper? Thanks But No Thanks
mona replied to THELIBERAL's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
True True! harper is a big dud. Why they voted that weenie in i will never know. He isn't a strong leader. He is very inarticulate and gives the impression of a canadian George W. Bush. Need I say more? -
Are we really a tolerant society?
mona replied to JerrySeinfeld's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Actually i find it quite the opposite. I am very liberal and i live in a very conservative, religious town. And when i express views like being pro choice and all for same sex marriage i get told that being gay is a "choice" and that they are gay to get attention. Then when i add that the majority of the animal kingdom has homosexual animals (read "Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice to All creation" by Olivia Judson) or when I point out that no one on their right mind would want to be abused due to their sexual preference, they tell me that i am wrong. Or when i tell them that i am pro choice that i am going to hell and that i am a bad person because I want to kill innocent babies. I think it is us who express the liberal views that get "Thrown to the Wolves". -
I know that this is a a decision that you would also have to base on their view but lets enter a hypothetical world. You are a member of a political party and you have to vote a new leader. there are two candidates: a Woman of mixed heritage and a white man. They have exactly the same views and values but you have to vote. Who would you vote for? Just Curious.

Thanks again for the reply, i see that i am creating chaos...excellent. as to Argus i have to say that you are terribly mistaken. yes a formal education is recommended i totally agree with those of you who express that concern. But it is not the end of the world if someone doesn't get a PHD in political science. As to that er opinion expressed that i would vote just on "Cleavage" and "Skin colour". Absolutely not. I was jsut pointing out that there is a lack of women in politics, especially women who are not white. I am a feminist argus, that is why i support women. I also think that we are still a country that values whote people over those of a more exotic ethnic background. I live in a predominately conservative, religious and white town and i hear people call those of african decent the n word and those of East Indian decent the p word and it disgusts me. This is why i would love to see someone that isn't your stereotypical politician beat the odds.

Hmmm...Why did the Liberals win the last what? 4 elections? Because people voted. The people's vote does count. Comparing Hockey to politics is like comparing apples to oranges (forgive the cliche). You vote does count because every person who votes makes a difference. Why do we have a minority government? because every vote counted in the last election. As to hockey and others things you coming to cheer someone on actually does make a difference (not the screaming in front of the t.v but being there does) It gives people confidence which makes you do better, I should know i'm an athlete. You saying that our votes don't count is encouraging young people not to vote which is not good. Did you vote in the last election? if not then you have no place complaining about the government because you didn't speak up using a slip of paper.

I have to agree that a pm's sexual preference who not deter me from making the right choice. however, it would certainly be interesting to see if canada is biased in a real life scenario. Actually what would be a riot is if Klein found out that one of his friends/family members was gay. Or harper for that matter. It would be interesting.

Thanks to all who have replied. some people brought up the point that Belinda was not the prime candidate for leadership because she is not bilingual and that she is uneducated. Well what does education have to do with being a leader? some have leadership skills, you don't need to be bilingual or go to an Ivy League school for that. I understand these people's concerns, but i disagree. As to Kim Campbell, well she was conservative and that i don't support them but a female prime minister would be terribly refreshing. Actually, a woman of mixed parentage would be excellent instead of the bunch of white old fuddy duddies who run our country. And Yes, i find that turning your back on the conservative party is an admirable trait. Get out before it's too late !

Excellent Points made. I don't think that women are sweet and kinder and gentler. on the contrary, sometime we can be worse then men! Homolka should be locked up for life. i respect Canada's judicial system but we should give longer sentences to murderers who kill in cold blood (i understand if murder is committed in self defense) that is the only hting i like about hte American system. If you kill people you get a heavy sentence (well at least for serial killers) Homolka need to be kept out of the public.

[sorry please let me clarify. Here in Conservative Alberta and living in a very conservative area, many believe that belinda is a common porstitute because of her decision. its a comment that in my opinion, is brought on because some men (or some women, they aren't innocent either) can't come up with anything more intelligent. Many local politicians and people writing to the local newspaper accuse her of this.
-
Of course we all heard about Belinda. Some call it disloyalty, some call it political smarts others don't give a damn. Personally, i admire Belinda for her courage and smarts in crossing the floor. She was exasperated by Harper's attitude (and if i may say so, his utter stupidity) and she believed that the Conservative party had failed her. I know many disagree with my statement but may i say that if Belinda was a man, she would not have received the insults and vulgar comment that she was "sleeping" her way to the top. She would have been called atraitor, but would it would have been accepted that she was just playing her cards correctly. i personally beleive that if Harper were to resign, that Belinda would be a strong candidate and leader. But that's jsut me. What do you think?

End of Canada's single-tier healthcare !
mona replied to Bakunin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
regarding I miss Reagan and those who agree with this individual, is our health care system that seriously flawed? Canada is a nation with one of the highest life expectancies in the world due to our health care system. If our health care were to become privatized, we will become our neighbour to the south. If we all look at the United State's health care system we can see canada if we were to have two tiered health care. I look at the U.S and cringe. The two tier system may benefit those with the money and the influence to have the needed health care but what of the people who make up the majority of the population, those who can't afford it? because of our health care system they can get the care they need, even if they have to wait. I would rather wait it out then have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. Maybe you who disagree have the money but the majority of the people i know don't possess salaries that can accomodate that.
