Nicaragua and the Canal

Just wondering if anyone knew anything or had something informed to say about this little known country. I've been working on some fiction writing about this country and the issue of the Canal is interesting because it's been a of dream of their's for a long time.

So, will it ever get built? Can they do it without US investments?

The canal seems like one of the saving graces for Nicaragua especially because of the high amount of poverty and lack of infrastructure. Unfortunately, they are under Communist-leaning control which won the elections by luck that the opposition was split. Most people there are neither pro-US or against, but they are extremely skeptical hence the question of can the Japanese, Chinese, Russians, or EU help them construct the canal, but not rape them out of profits that could rebuild their education system and provide infrastructure?

Ortega was for it prior to winning and has gone back on it claiming environmental reasons which is a crock because after what the Sandinistas did to that country after their so-called "revolution" there was more devastation than before. On top of that, they are the lap-dog of Chavez because of their leftist ties. Can that dream ever be achieved with these factors?
