jefferiah Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 (edited) I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this, but I thought I would try to start an "ice breaker" thread about food. The idea being you can share recipes or talk about foods you like. Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, Conservatives, Liberals, Democrats, New Democrats, and Republicans----we all have stomachs. Now let's here what you all like to stuff them with. jefferiah Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 And also I'd like to add beverages and booze to that. And I wanna know what is the best beer? And which is better--Coke or Pepsi? "Governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish - too much handling will spoil it." Lao Tzu
AngusThermopyle Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 (edited) Thats not a bad idea actually. I love to talk about food and "ahem" Beverages. The why don't you eat pork thread turned into a food discussion and I was enjoying it quite a bit even though I felt a little guilty (easily suppressed) about "thread hijacking". Well I guess it's pretty obvious from what I said in the other thread that I'm a meat eater. As for drinks, I like pure juice, orange, apple, tomatoe that kind of stuff. As for alcoholic beverages I pretty much just drink beer and wine now although I do occasionally like a good Scotch or Rye. I have a pretty good wine collection but it's hard to maintain. When the guy's from work come over more than one or two bottles get drunk. I think I have 22-25 bottles in the cooler now but I do have to stock it up again, it'll hold 44 bottles. I don't care for German wines but I do like some of the Australian and New Zealand wines. There are also a lot of very good Canadian and Californian wines. Some terrific French wines too as well as Italian, though with the Italian wines you have to be a little more careful. I've found that they vary from one extreme to the other in taste and viscosity. Oh yeah, when the guy's come over we drink beer too. I made it sound like they were the prissy construction workers, nope, they're dirty and smelly and uncouth, just as they should be.We drink beer. Kokanee, Pil, Canadian that sort of stuff. Sometimes we'll drink Bud as well. Now I think about it this is actually appropriate. In past times beer was actually worshiped by some cultures. I was reading about it, fascinating stuff. Apparently they believed it must be divine because of it's effects, they thought it was a manifestation of the Nirvana of the gods. It might just be a better world today if people believed in beer over deities. I've never seen one of my buddies inspired by beer to strap on a bomb vest or blow up some building, they usually just become incoherent, stumble around and laugh a lot while they talk loudly and play the music way too loud. I imagine that traffic fatalities would skyrocket though. Edited August 25, 2007 by AngusThermopyle I yam what I yam - Popeye
marcinmoka Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 (edited) I'm an oddity on this topic Likes (When finances accommodate my sorry student a** that is) -------- - French food (for all their short comings and political stubborness, they redeem themselves in the kitchen) From Unpasteurized Rocamadour, Brie aux Truffes, Foies Gras au Figues, Magret de Canada Fumee, Escargot en Brioche to pastries with butter contents dwelling in the area of 10lbs per square inch, they know how to please the stomach and satisfy the soul. - Smoked Salmon, and much to the chagrin of those around me. I could eat this day and night, on its own, and thus why I earned the nickname translating into the "great canadian grizzly bear" after an akward 25 hr bus ride in Europe. Ah well. - Polish Perogies (Mushrooms, Saurkraut) with a nice side of greasy pork cutlets. - And of course, Thai, Chinese and Sushi. Why is it that Asian Cuisines are the only ones competent enough to actually make vegetables taste good? - Vino. Red. Thick. Since I'm po', I stick to the Yellow Tale or Valipolcela. Though a nice Steam Whistle pilsner hits the spot, along with the offering from a few other micro breweries I could not name. N.B. Gotta love Presidents Choice. I can eat like a king for relatively cheap (and collect P.C points well) Don't like ------------- As much I like British humour, I pity them and their food. And this includes the poor Scots too. While they are the champions of brilliant single malt's, a nation which considers a deep fried Mars Bar to be culinary staple...well......urgh, lets leave it at that. capricorn Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 And also I'd like to add beverages and booze to that. And I wanna know what is the best beer? And which is better--Coke or Pepsi? Best booze gotta be single malt scotch. I visited a scotch distillery in Scotland (Glenfarclas). Fantastic. The place smelled of olives big time, don't know why. But the samples chased away the smell. Best beer - Coors, unless we run out of it then it's any brand on hand. Coke and pepsi are great for cleaning brass. Don't laugh, some military guys I know clean their buttons with it. Imagine what it does to you stomach. As for food, it's past midnight, I'll sleep on it and report tomorrow. jefferiah Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 Thanks for the replies so far folks. I wasn't sure if I would get any. Mmmm....I guess I am kind of plain eater. I like meat and potatoes, boiled yellow beans, turnips, squash. All smothered in slimy butter. That's my kind of meal right there. For breakfast---Red River Cereal. Or Quaker Oats. I like cooking my hot cereal with some apple cubes and a little cinnamon. Right now I use a lot of stuff out of the garden. I use leaf lettuce, raddish, cucumbers etc in salads most every day. Leaf lettuce is excellent cuz unlike head lettuce, you dont run out. You pick the leaves and they grow back. And I eat quite a bit of zuchinni in the summer because I grow that too. I stir fry it in oil with some beans and peas. No special sauce. Just salt, pepper. Very plain. Buttercup squash---thats gotta be my favourite veggie (its a fruit really but....) As for meat I am not picky. Hot dogs, steaks, roasts, sausages, chicken nuggets, roasts---of course I'd rather have a roast than a hot dog or chicken nugget--but anyhow. I like fish. Sole, haddock, salmon---all that is good. I like some canned fish too---sardines, herring etc. Beverages...I don't drink much alcohol, but I'll have Alexander Keiths if you can get me to a bar now. Kind of homebody. I don't like wine, but my brother makes lots and usually gives me a bottle (which I usually have one glass of before tossing it a month later). Don't tell him. Coffee..now there is a beverage folks. If you ever see me online here at 3:44 am this is because of my love for coffee. I like a really dark roasted coffee, a little cream, no sugar. I like Tim's too, but only in small doses...gives me the shakes. I drink King Cole Tea (maritimer staple). The proper way to make King Cole Tea is to put two or three bags in the pot and boil it to death. It's gotta be black black black. Then you add canned evaporated milk. And I love pies. Pies better than cake. I usually ask for a pie on my birthday. Never a cake. And no creamy sugar banana pies. Thats gross. I like apple, cherry, strawberry rhubarb, tomato lemon, etc. My favourite pie now, is one I hated when I was a kid---Pumpkin Pie. That is the king of pies. I mentioned my brother making wine. He gets those wine kits at the brew shops. He doesn't do the old fashioned gig. But anyway, do we have any brewers here? Even though I don't drink much it would be a great hobby I think. jefferiah Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 (edited) I love perogies Marc, but Ive never had polish ones. Sounds pretty good though. And is that deep fried Mars Bar thing for real? Ive never heard of that. Oh and I think Coke is better than Pepsi. Unless you are stuck with diet cola (blech). Then the reverse is true. marcinmoka Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 And is that deep fried Mars Bar thing for real? It is. And it is usually served with caramel and/or chocolate sauce to add insult to injury. I felt I was having heart palpitations midway through the 'meal'. I guess you only live once (though considerably shorter). In a study[3] published in The Lancet in December 2004, David Morrison (Greater Glasgow NHS Board, UK) and Mark Petticrew (MRC Social & Public Health Sciences Unit) surveyed around 300 Scottish fish and chip shops: 22% sold deep-fried Mars Bars; three-quarters of the shops had only been selling them for the past 3 years. Average sales were 23 bars per week, although 10 outlets sold between 50 and 200 bars a week. The average price per bar was 60 pence, and perhaps unsurprisingly, the younger generation were the main purchasers--three-quarters were sold to children and 15% to adolescents. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep-fried_Mars_bar " Influence is far more powerful than control"
AngusThermopyle Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 That Mars bar thing must be pretty recent, never had that when I lived there. They do eat some pretty disgusting stuff though, fried bread is one that comes to mind. Seafood, thats another of my favourites. I love Lobster, Crab, fish, Shrimp and Scallops. I don't like Clams and Oysters though. That was one thing I loved about living in Halifax/Dartmouth, the seafood was about as fresh as you could get. I also loved the Donairs you could get there, they just don't make them the same way in other parts of Canada. I yam what I yam - Popeye
jefferiah Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 I live by a fishing wharf Angus. Lots of that stuff here. My family used to fish--my uncle had a lobster boat. I never fished. Lobster is good but its not something I go crazy over, but most people seem to. I love shrimp though. Great in stir fry. Scallops too. So you actually had the deep-fried Mars Bar, Marc. Was it tasty? I have had deep fried ice cream before. Poutine is a good artery clogger, but I love that---with potato wedges instead of fries though. A couple things I forgot to mention are stewed rhubarb with bread and butter, and peanut butter and molasses sandwiches (with a tall glass of milk). Higgly Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 We need a miscellaneous forum. Every online board I participate in has one. We also need one to discuss issues related to the media since that plays such an important role in the political scene. "We have seen the enemy and he is us!". Pogo (Walt Kelly).
Charles Anthony Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Sorry, guys. This is off-topic. We do not have time for a meeting of the flat earth society. << Où sont mes amis ? Ils sont ici, ils sont ici... >>
