Hey

I dont know if it would be legal. It makes sense for the individual so it is something we def need. Could a private group or individual start one or would that somehow be illegal.

fyi organ donation pool = members agree to give organs to other members first if they die before organs donated to the general pool.

You can't even pool health care costs for services provided under the Canada Health Act and you want the government to allow you to pool organs?

Not to mention, that's a little weird.

The NDP in Ont. are trying to get the Ont. government to make everyone a donor by reverse onus. Their argument is that at the time of an accident they often can't find the donor card in time to see what it says. What if they take someones organs and after they find the card and it says no. To presume that everyone is a consenting donor sounds like a modern day version of the body snatchers.

Considering that very few sign their cards, yes, that is quite a presumption.

It would be illegal under the laws that we now have in place. All organ transplants are done in order of the list of those in the most need. It is different if you wanted to donate a kidney to a family memeber where both you and the member are still alive, but once you have died and your organs harvested, they go to those on the list and there is no way to get around that.

As for how to make sure organ donators can be recognised by the hospitals as they come in, it would be very difficult unless there were a tattoo or something the like that would be easily identified. I do know once I am dead, any and all of my remeains can be used for transplant or for science and education. All my family members know this and I am sure they will make it known at the time. If there were a registry where I could put my wishes I would gladly make that known there as well. I would suggest that everyone do something along the same lines.

IMV, people should be able to "will" their organs to whomever they wish. If they wish to "will" them into the pool, so be it.

IMV, people (or their estate) should be able to sell their organs, afterall it is their body. Obviously the estate should only be able to sell the organs if the person has preauthorized it. If they allowed this, there would not be a shortage of organs and people would be properly compensated for their donation.

And why do you think Canada in specific has an organ donation problem?

Why is that?

Hmmmmm.. geee... I wonder why....

---- Charles Anthony banned me for 30 days on April 28 for 'obnoxious libel' when I suggested Jack Layton took part in illegal activities in a message parlor. Claiming a politician took part in illegal activity is not rightful cause for banning and is what is discussed here almost daily in one capacity or another. This was really a brownshirt style censorship from a moderator on mapleleafweb http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1oGB-BKdZg---

I agree it's pretty macabre and sure doesn't respect an individual's options, or the chance to make those options known.

I'm not against organ donation per se, but I have a fear that I won't be good and dead before the take them. I have to be totally dead and nothing beating or working before they get the hands on my stuff. :)-
