Topaz Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 We now have 66 soldiers that have been killed in Afghanistan and when they arrive back in Canada, other than the Minister of Defense and the Gov.General, has Harper ever gone and met the caskets arriving home?? IF so, I'm glad to know that BUT, IF he hasn't why not?? He is the one that extended their mission over there and I think as PM he should always be there, so he will know exactly what it means when a PM commits Canada to war. Quote

PM Harper has been to some of the repatriations, but not all of them. He is still the PM and has other work to do, he cannot be everywhere all the time. He does call each of the families and offer his condolences (something Chretien did not do). Mr Chetien never attended a ceremony for casualties from the Balkans, although he was at the ceremony in Edmonton in 2002 for our first war dead from the friendly fire incident. The families are not left to fend for themselves, the military steps in to help. Their regiments help the families, as does the CDS and MND. Gen Hillier visits wounded troops in hospitals as does MND. Quote
AngusThermopyle Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Harper has done far more to support the troops than any other PM I can think of. At least he's actually gone to see them in an actual active theater. As was stated, he's a busy man, I dont think he'd have time to attend every repatriation even if it was his firmest desire to do so. I know it would have meant a hell of a lot to us when we were deployed if our PM had come to see us. When we were in Somalia our CDS visited. We donned our best bib and tucker and formed up on parade in the heat. The parade commander then told us to salute as the contrails passed overhead at about 30,000'. Nice visit eh? At least Harper hasn't pulled that kind of cheesy shit on the boys. Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye
