mcqueen625 Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Dion urges Harper to sign UN human rights document for native peoples APThis was the lead in to an article which appeared in the Associated Press. Isn't it a bit hypocritical of Dion to spout this type of condemnation especially since he was a member of successive Liberal governments who did exactly nothing to further the human rights of First Nations peoples in Canada while they were in office? While the Liberals were in office I seem to remember the Canadian government being taken to task by the corrupt U.N. for our government's treatment of these very peoples, yet they did absolutely nothing about it. That's strike three against this wanabe leader, the first being the fact that he doesn't think it important to be Canadian first, in order to be PM, while most Canadians feel it is a must. The second is his stance on the environment and Kyoto, since he WAS the Environment Minister under Jean Chretien when this flawed document was signed by the Liberals, and then allowed emission levels to rise more than 30% after this document was signed, to the point that is is impossible to meet those lofty goals without consumers facing price shock, and the loss of many jobs. He now proposes to take the Canadian government to task for not signing a declaration with the U.N. to protect First Nations People's human rights. This man has absolutely no clue that he is being hypocrital in his views, as if Canadians will have forgotten his past record, on many of the issues he is now harping about. Granted, I see no reason for not signing such a document, but the problem should have been fixed way back when the U.N. first brought up the issue regarding Canada's treatment of indigenous peoples. If the Liberal are going to take the Conservatives to task for something it should at least be on issues that the Liberals have some credibility and have not already screwed up before they left office. To do otherwise shows graphically how little credibility the Liberals actually have. Has anyone forgotten Sponsorship, Supply and Services, Public Works, and the many other scandals that took place under the Liberals. They had no credibility then, and the truth is they have not changed. The thing they are most upset with Canadians about is that we finally showed them where the door was, and the really sad part is their perception that they did nothing wrong by misappropriating taxpayer's money. I'm shocked.I thought the Liberals turned the reserves into decent places any middle or even upper class person would want to live. I thought the people there were trained for and provided jobs, and the means to a decent lifestyle, and that Harper wrecked it all.
