Canuck E Stan Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 Liberal senators may defy Dion on budget bill Dion was unequivocal Wednesday: senators have no choice but to accept the bill no matter how little they like it."It's even the law," Dion said of the Senate's responsibility not to block budget bills. Mercer pointed out that the Senate is not considered a confidence chamber and thus, unlike the Commons, it can defeat money bills without provoking an election. He said he's already warned Dion that he and other Atlantic Canadian senators won't support the bill, regardless of the leader's view on the matter. So here's Dion unable to control Liberal senators in the Red Chamber.Says a lot for his leadership. What happens then? Harper can go to the GG and say he can't govern under these conditions, and request that an election be called. So here we go again. Dion is definitely not ready for Prime Time with most in the country saying he's not a leader. An election call at this time will finish him off as Liberal leader. And to top it off, there will be a renewed displeasure with the Senate. The Conservative ads on the Senate will have done their job. Bring it on! Quote "Any man under 30 who is not a liberal has no heart, and any man over 30 who is not a conservative has no brains." — Winston Churchill
hiti Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 Reminds me of 1993 when Lyin Brian Mulroney was also unable to control the Troy Senators as they rejected his budget bill. I think we got ourselves another Lyin PM Quote "You cannot bring your Western standards to Afghanistan and expect them to work. This is a different society and a different culture." -Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan June 23/07
Canuck E Stan Posted June 15, 2007 Author Report Posted June 15, 2007 Senate bashing may revive Tories One of the smarter moves the Conservatives made in recent weeks was the decision to bash the Senate in new television ads -- specifically by claiming the democratically-elected government's agenda is being thwarted by unelected Liberal senators. The news will have been greeted with some nervousness by Liberal leader Stephane Dion. If the budget is not passed by month's end, the government says $4-billion intended for program spending will not go out the door as planned and he will get the blame. With the media in Ontario giving support to Harper's stand on the Accord issue, you can bet voters there will be really pissed with Dion and the Liberal Senators. Watch for an upward surge in the polls for Harper. Quote "Any man under 30 who is not a liberal has no heart, and any man over 30 who is not a conservative has no brains." — Winston Churchill

Watch for an upward surge in the polls for Harper. They are up three points in the last poll on the Political Polls thread. Is that the start of the upswing? Fortunata Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 I don't think party leaders should hold any sway over Senators. What's the point in even having a Senate if it is going to be more of the HoC? Senators should be doing the job they were appointed to do regardless of party affiliation; leave the muck on the HoC floor. I don't think there has ever been a more divisive government than this one seems to be. Quote
