Guest American Woman Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 You raise an interesting point. The USA, arguably speaking, shows the most 'orderless, valueless, materialistic bent' of any Western society - and yet the USA is the one Western country with the most religious belief. That is to say, the one country with the worst morality apparently is the one country with the most morality. Curious phenomena that. Americans have the worst morality of any western nation?? I'd like to see what information you're basing that statement on. Quote

I'd like to see what information you're basing that statement on. Apparently not the per capita contributions to the latest Tsunami, or the general American response to every disaster around the world since 1945, or anything else based in reality. Apparently it's based on deeply help secrets within the core of the left. Quote

That is to say, the one country with the worst morality apparently is the one country with the most morality. Your premise is based on false assumptions. The USA certainly has scale on such matters, but is not the most religious or moral/immoral western nation. Hell, Norway has state sponsored religion with 80% membership (but they are not that religious). Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
cybercoma Posted June 18, 2007 Author Report Posted June 18, 2007 The US Government murders its citizens (with tax dollars that most citizens contribute to), through executions... not exactly what I'd call the pinnacle of morality. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 (edited) The US Government murders its citizens (with tax dollars that most citizens contribute to), through executions... not exactly what I'd call the pinnacle of morality. Some states have capital punishment, some don't, so it's not the "U.S. government" doing it. Edited to add: the federal government does inflict capital punishment at times too, so my statement would technically be incorrect. However, the fact remains that not all states have capital punishment, and I don't think capital punishment in and of itself would make us the "most amoral nation in western society." I am quite frankly shocked at that assessment; that we are the most "orderless, valueless, materialistic bent." Edited June 18, 2007 by American Woman Quote
jazzer Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 Compare crime rates of the U.S. with other western nations, handgun deaths in particular. Quote

I am quite frankly shocked at that assessment; that we are the most "orderless, valueless, materialistic bent." I didn't suggest any of that. I simply find it appalling that your federal government sits back and allows states (and as you said, the Fed. Gov. does it as well) put people to death. It's not a matter of being amoral, it's completely immoral to systemically put people to death and the United States is the only Western Nation to do that. Orderless, valueless and materialistic are not descriptions I've used, or even implied. I simply find it appalling that the citizens of a nation allow their government to punish other citizens by putting them to death. Sure, it's less appalling than stoning women in the street for having a relationship and getting pregnant before married. But, it's still murder. And the question has to be asked... is it ever ok for the government to decide that one of its citizens should have their life ended? Quote

According to this measure, the USA is the most religious nation in the west (by a large margin). Quote

Well, it is understood by you, but until such time as it is understood by smart people, the "understanding" doesn't mean anything. Quote
