I never implied Dion would get dumped before an election. I said above it would be folly on the part of the Liberals to do so. Insiders have reason to be worried about going into an election with Dion at the helm.

My sense is that with Dion as leader, the Liberals will lose the next election to the Conservatives. Unless, of course, the Conservatives commit a whopper which Canadians could not possibly stomach. Possibly, there is enough time for this to happen.

Might not be a whopper. Just a series of things like Afghanistan, the environment, equalization and other issues where they often on the wrong side of the issue.

The Tories were at or near to 40% in the polls a few weeks ago. Now, they are at 29%. The Liberals have remained steady, perhaps even gaining a point or two. If an election were held this week, it is quite possible the Tories could go down in defeat.

There is time for a big whopper to happen. But I don't think it will.

The budget is looking like a minor storm.

The Environment is a push, basically the best the Conservatives can hope for.

Afghanistan will hold the Conservatives back from a majority, but that's it.

As others have said, Harper's handling of the situation with Saskatchewan and the Atlantic provinces could be very well received by the rest of the country. Let's see if his numbers increase as a result within the next week or so.

Anything is possible. However, the reaction to Harper's trip was blunted by the fact that one of Nova Scotia's MPs was ousted after a senior member of the party said that the Tories would never do such a thing as that is what the Liberals do.

It is stuff like that dominate a headline and any positives Harper hoped to generate were lost.

Now, he has various provinces unhappy with him for a variety of reasons. It has not be a good number of weeks for the Tories. They need to think of some new priorities because they are not controlling the agenda anymore.

It's the start of the dog days of summer.

The Senate will make noises about holding up the budget but they won't.

Harper is a shrewd tactician. He'll take the summer to come up with a new agenda for the next two years.

If the Senate holds up any more legislation, they are going to find themselves booted right out to an ice floe or something.

I'm a little more than ticked at these partisan bagmen holding up the legislation of the democratically elected House of Commons.

The Senate has to do their job.

And Dion is such a bad leader that he got three standing ovations during his speech to the gathering of Municipalities in Calgary a couple of weeks ago. :)

Response to Steve? Polite applause.

It is amusing to read the comments from scared Steve supporters as they watch the wheels fall off his little red wagon.

And the billions he handed to Quebec at the expense of other provinces in the last budget? It was to save us from the spectre of separatism, not to get votes in Quebec and not to get another fellow altruist, Gilles Duceppe, to vote for the budget.
Has any PM done differently?

He keeps repeating the same phrases over and over though.
Same way the rock group "Silver Convention", a German group, kept on repeating "Fly Robin Fly" (link) and "Get Up and Boogie" (link), their two 1976 disco hits. The titles were the sole lyrics, and were repeated over and over. Problem was, Silver Convention didn't speak a word of English.

Paul Martin was in power for approximately as long as Stephen Harper. How much did he shovel into Quebec at the expense of other provinces?

He did some further "de-Britishization" relating to passports. Also, appointed FLQ sympathizer as GG. Not sure about money.

That was the question.

I don't want Dion as PM either but I don't want him less than I don't want Steve. A lot of people feel that way and it will show up at the voting booth. I'm not saying that Dion will win the next election but people vote for the lessers of the unwanteds. As long as the Steve government disrupts government because he can't get his way; if he keeps up the personal unwarranted (and stupid) attacks on others; as long as he keeps denying the obvious he might find himself the the opposition box again. Canadians only will stand for so much crapola.
