Guthrie Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 Link UK Updates Report on Impact of Climate Change on Human Health6 May 2007 The UK Department of Health (DH) has released an update to an earlier 2002 report that assessed the human health effects of climate change. An important feature of the new report, according to the DH, is the updating of the climate change scenarios as the context for the assessment of the human health impact. Models used in the new report predict an increase of mean annual temperature in the UK of between 2.5 and 3 degrees Centigrade by the end of the century. ... The good news? The DH has revised downward, the chance of a malaria outbreak in Great Britain -- but say increased rainfall, as predicted, will also bring "increased numbers of bacteria in surface water; Increased water temperature leading to an increase in algal blooms in reservoirs; and A decrease in the efficiency of chemical coagulation: a major method of removal of microbes from drinking water." So, less malaria but more deaths directly attributed to polution and potential for other vector infestations and outbreaks of disease and then there are the coastal floods, which will claim lives as well --- bottom line, it will not be long before the list of species endangered by GW extends well beyond arctic animals and humans will be on the list in significant numbers, soon Quote “Most middle-class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal” - Benjamin Spock MD
