jdobbin Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 Looks like PEI is about to go the polls. Binns remains popular among the public but Ghiz is expected to put up a good campaign. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...29?hub=Politics The Binns government faces opposition assault on two major fronts, the environment and the perennial issue in Atlantic Canada _ keeping youth home.Although Binns says he has tried, he has not been able to stem the out-migration of young people searching for better opportunities in the West, especially Alberta. It's a sore point with Atlantic voters. It was one of the key issues that led to the defeat of Bernard Lord's Progressive Conservative government in neighbouring New Brunswick. P.E.I.'s population hovers around 136,000. "Our population is stagnant,'' Ghiz says, complaining that the Binns government has not used tax incentives to keep people in the province and lure immigrants. "We have far too many Islanders living and working in Fort McMurray instead of living here in P.E.I.'' Quote

guyser Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 Lure immigrants to PEI? To do what exactly? Grow potato , make Anne handicrafts and drive Japanese tourists. From what I gather, PEI does not take kindly to those born off the island. My aunt and uncle moved there upon retirement and said it has been very hard and they own a store and been there more than a decade. Quote
Canuck E Stan Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 Lure immigrants to PEI? To do what exactly? Couldn't resist......top ten reasons for immigrants to go to PEI. 1.To drive bus loads of young PEI'ers out West. 2.Set up facilities for tourists to show them modern ghost towns. 3.So there aren't more politicians than the people they represent. 4.Have an interpreter waiting for the illegal refugees when their boats land. 5.Create an audience, immigrants are the only ones who haven't seen Anne of Green Gables. 6.Help PEI's environmental green program- making sun died potato chips. 7.So PEI has enough people to actually have people affected by climate change. 8.Get to see how much a combined sales tax of 16.6% makes your purchased item seem like an expensive foreign purchase. 9.See the Blue Jays play. 10.So there is someone to turn out all the lights when the last 'true blue' Prince Edward Islander leaves. Charles Anthony Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 P.E.I. is pretty and peaceful despite the inconsistent weather. [Quebec City, on the other hand, is always beautiful even on the most painfully cold February day.] How many Canadians have vacationed South but have never seen P.E.I.? My first visit to P.E.I. was pleasant but weird. [i often hear people say that entering Quebec is like entering a foreign country. Those people have not seen much of Canada.] That morning the weather was nice and I drove the entire perimeter of their island -- a very lovely countryside. I saw the Sand Elephant before its trunk got washed away a few years ago and sat in the Giant's Chair. That evening, in Charlottetown, a couple asked ME for directions to a particular pub known for its seafood chowder. I assumed they were tourists too and enthusiastically asked them their origins. They were embarrassed. They confessed they were from the Western part of the island and did not "come into 'Town very often" if at all. They were older than me. People in P.E.I. can not expect things just to happen by government decree. Liberals promise to end P.E.I. can banThe Liberals are promising to lift P.E.I.'s ban on canned pop if they win the next provincial election. ---SNIP--- Binns said he continues to take the issue under advisement, but refused to show his hand as far as any kind of campaign promise. One of the reasons he's been reluctant to make a move on this front is the potential for job losses at the Island bottling plant, he said. Ghiz countered that part of his promise is to ensure laid-off employees are given training and new job possibilities. CBC.caThe sale of soda in cans and in plastic bottles is outlawed in P.E.I. to protect a local bottling company -- such an old-fashioned and backwards way of supporting a local economy. Incidentally, the second time I visited P.E.I. was the first and only time that somebody explained to me how to question and discern the quality of lobster served at a restaurant. The restaurant must have a live tank on display and you should see the chef pick it up after your order. Some places freeze and re-cook. The restaurant should also be able to tell you when the animal was caught. In P.E.I., there are two harvests each year. The longer the animal spent in the open sea, the better the meat. You want a lobster from the most recent harvest. Some places keep lobster in tanks for a long time. In Central Canada, you have very little choice. What do people eat in the West? However, some places in the Atlantic provinces will ship live lobster in bags of water through overnight delivery. jdobbin Posted May 28, 2007 Author Report Posted May 28, 2007 PEI's election is tomorrow. A poll has come up to indicate Tory rule could be coming to an end. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories A recent poll showed the Liberals led by Robert Ghiz, 33, are poised to win 18 of the province's 27 seats.Progressive Conservative Premier Pat Binns conceded Ghiz has taken the fight to him, but said he's still planning to come out on top. "There was one poll that said that, but there are other polls and the only one that really counts is the election poll," Binns told CTV's Question Period on Sunday. I don't know too much of the local issues in PEI. We'll have to see what happens. Quote

Soft drinks taste better in glass bottles though. Plastic bottles taste like plastic. Aluminum cans taste like metal. Sometimes overregulation of the market can make things more delicious. Quote

jdobbin Posted May 28, 2007 Author Report Posted May 28, 2007 PEI elects a Liberal government. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories P.E.I. voters braved the rain Monday to elect Liberal Leader Robert Ghiz, son of former premier Joe Ghiz, ending the 11-year Progressive Conservative government of Pat Binns. At the time of the legislature's dissolution, the Liberals had just four seats compared with the Tories' 23. Ghiz, 33, campaigned on a promise of lower taxes and better health care. As he cast his ballot on Monday, he told CTV Atlantic he felt anxious about the results. I don't have a seat count yet. Quote
