I can never figure out Quebec Politics. Just when I think I know what is going on in the Province, there is another new twist.

The NDP have never been a force in Quebec, and Provincially the rise of the ADQ would seem to be the opposite trend.

Here is the article

http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news...03-6add1ade8f24

The New Democratic Party hopes to give its bleak Quebec fortunes a boost today, when party leader Jack Layton announces that former Quebec environment minister Thomas Mulcair has agreed to run as its star candidate in the province, The Gazette has learned

I am interested in comments from the Quebec posters here, as well as anyone whom speaks French and knows what the pundits are saying?

I can't find anything to say which riding he is going to run in. I think that would be critical to his chances.

He hasn't said.

Mulcair was born in Ottawa, he studied at McGill, he lives in Montreal's very anglo West Island. He was elected to the NA from Laval (Chomedy). Charest made him Environment minister but then he resigned over a dispute about privatizing part of a public ski hill.

Mulcair said that he had contacts with the Conservatives but felt that they were not serious about environmental issues.

My only surprise is that he said nothing about the federal Liberals. Quebec politics are changing but I wouldn't look for a virement NPD anytime soon.

The next major change - other than an ADQ government - will be anglo ridings going ADQ.

I heard on MDL that Outremont is being mentioned.

Hear are the 2006 results.

Canadian federal election, 2006

Party Candidate Votes

Liberal Jean Lapierre 14,281

Bloc Québécois Jacques Leonard 11,714

New Democrat Leo-Paul Lauzon 6,965

Conservative Daniel Fournier 5,218

Green Francois Pilon 1,948

Marxist-Leninist Linda Sullivan 175

Progressive Canadian Philip Paynter 102

Independent Eric Roach Denis 101

Independent Yan Lacombe 85

Independent Xavier Rochon 41

Independent Regent Millette 24

I find it interesting that in this Riding the NDP finished ahead of the Conservative candidate. I have always thought that the NDP were a distant 4th or worse in Quebec.

Is this his home riding as well?
