This is not a matter of people rejecting new leadership...

But more likely leaders, upon reading the writing on the wall, jumping ship.

The lesson being that, when the electorate gets in a mood for serious change, a new face on an old horse rarely, if ever, cuts it for voters.

Anyone who thinks Martin...especially now in light of the emergence of a new conservative party...is a cakewalk for winning this next election, deffinitely has not being paying attention to Canadian political history.

And deffinitely is ignoring the mood of a decidedly cranky electorate right now.

A mood that has thus far, over the last couple years, seen incumbant governments swept out of office in BC, Manitoba, Quebec, Ontario, and Newfoundland...and it would appear, soon to be, Saskatchewan.

Even the supposedly untouchable Bernard Lord had his own political "near death experience".

A telling sign of what is coming is to watch for a sudden string of Liberals announcing their retirement, and/or a rash of MPs being appointed to either the Senate or cushy civil service jobs.

All hell is about to break out on the federal political scene, kiddies. It's show time!

It is time for a major change in Ottawa. In fact, The Conservatives could

clinch a win if they addressed the Democratic deficit by promising an

elected senate, and Mixed Member Proportional Representation. That is an

issue which will resonate well with voters sickened by the dictatorial power

of the Crouton regime, and the total disdain shown them. Don't forget, most

Canadians voted AGAINST the Liberals in the last 3 elections. 38% -42% of

the votes should not equal 100% of the power.

I think people are quite fed up with politics as usual. and if the

Conservatives say that they'll bring in MMPR (Which provides for local

representation, as well as slate candidates) , thus sticking out their own

necks, and recognizing that they'll have to learn to build coalitions and

take water in their wine, I think you will see the Liberals given the much

deserved, and LONG overdue, "Order of the Boot".

Are the Conservatives smart enough to do this? Thusfar, given that the Liberals have governed 70% of the time for the last century, the Conservatives should be chomping at the bit to dismantle a system that has served the Liberals so well for so long, instead of deluding themselves that they too, will profit from it.

You all probably know that I'm not a die-hard conservative supporter (fiscally yes, socially no), but I have to recognize the fact that with everything that's on the go, this has to be a very exciting time for those right wingers out there. Even I have been caught up with any and all news of the merger talks, and it's not a 'know your enemy' kind of thing either. Depending on the leader and the platform, or as long as the party is relatively socially progressive and is not going to bend over and take it from the US, then this boy may just buy himself a membership.

Peter MacKay has sold out the PC Party and, even worse, Canadians.

Oh, sure, it is being painted as the Alliance giving in to Peter's insistence of using the PC Party method of choosing a leader. While the FIRST selection uses that method, the new Party is not bound to do so in subsequent selections. Who wants to bet that the overwhelmingly former CA membership will stick with a method that they despise.

The Founding Principles warm, fuzzy, nothings, included to appease PROGRESSIVE Conservatives. Until the new Party has a set of policies voted on by the membership and a Platform, no one knows what the new Party stands for (we only know that it stands AGAINST the Liberals). Again, who wants to bet that the CA Majority view dosen't eventually prevail?

Sure, it likely will not be until after the next election, when the membership gets it's say in the new Party, that it will become obvious this has indeed been a takeover. It will be too late then, Many will have tuned out completely, or gone to other parties by then, and Canadians will really have no alternative to the Liberals.

Peter MacKay did the right thing. The PROGRESSIVE Conservative Party was not coming back to power agian for another hundred years. Now there is a good chance of the Liberals getting the boot. Both parties took water in their wine, and canadians will be the richer politically for it.

If you wanted proof that the Liberals are shaking, note that all the Liberal papers are playing up fringe elements like Orchard and Jurassic Joe. and talking about how bad it would be for Mike Harris to run.

The Liberals are truly frightened. Their vaunted "machine" has never really had to FIGHT an election, and the corrupt bunch has never faced an opposition worth a damn.

I thought it was supposed to be the conservatives who would knife their leaders!!!!!

I would discount Rockhead and Tequila Sheila at this point both are has-beens who never really were....

I think Martin had better watch out for the McKenna-ites,

A challenger jet full of politicians takes off from Ottawa Airport, and is forced to make an emergency crash landing in a farmer's field near Winchester.

The Farmer goes out to check out the scene and proceeds to bury them.

A few days later a policeman knocks on the farmer's door after spotting the wreckage of the bus, and asked about the condition and wherabouts of the famous occupants.

Farmer answers "They were all dead, so I buried them right here in my field."

Policeman: "Are you sure they were all dead?"

Farmer: "Yes....... though some of them said they were still alive, but I can't believe anything a politician says!"
