It seems about 1 in 10 rams prefers to mount other rams, thus reducing its value to farmers, so a university in Oregon has been studying the problem to help farmers. But gay groups don't like the idea.

What do you think?

I'm curious. Why,oh why are gay right activists up in arms about this? All they are trying to do is make animals more viable for the farmer. The fact that they extropolate this to mean that gayness is a trait that may be able to be 'straightened' out just goes to show how bloody sensitive they are to any perceived attack to be as gay as they want to be,that maybe gayness as a biological trait is a threat to them.Who knows?

I don't see why some gays are so bent out of shape on this. The scientists aren't judging anybody, just trying to solve a problem for the farmer. He needs his rams to be productive, so to speak, and many such problems have thus been solved.

Gays are being silly on this.

Do farmers even bother with natural reproduction methods these days anyway?

Every farm I've been to the farmers select the best (biggest, healthiest) male specimens and use their sperm to artificially inseminate the appropriate breeding stock. To all farmers who operate like this, the sexual orientation of the animal is irrelevant and they likely couldn't care less which way their animals swing.

So I don't accept the arguement that these studies are to improve the reproductive capabilities of a given farmer's herd - if they want to maximize efficiency use scientific methods to achieve reproduction.

I swear to drunk I'm not god.

If you want to see why some people are worried about this, just look at paragraph three in the link provided in the original post:

It raises the prospect that pregnant women could one day be offered a treatment to reduce or eliminate the chance that their offspring will be homosexual.

While I would guess that most of the researchers really are only concerned with sheep, there are people in this world who would love to see a technique used to eliminate homosexual traits in sheep modified to be used on humans. And that, I think, is troubling. After all, if the technique can be used on humans, with other modifications what other traits could it suppress?

I think we are already there in a way. An old friend and his wife was advised to abort their baby by the doctor because of concerns dealing with the fetus's development/health. Apparently doctors advise this whenever they think they should, and parents make an informed decision. My friends decided to have the baby, and the doc was wrong after all.

I fail to see how we could get there with the gay issue however, in this case. Sheep are much removed from the human body and scientists study other animals when trying to solve a human disease. It's much more complicated than adjusting a 'technique' to suit the human body.

Chuck, the story says that farmers need Rams mounting females, so I assume that sheep farmers may not be using artificial insemination. I know that they use it for cows and horses, however.

Let's face it everyone, it's a University. In Oregon. Rub those 2 facts together and you get an organization that's hypersensitive about politically correctness and gay rights. They wouldn't dream about expanding this study to finding the human gay gene no matter if George Bush himself offered a billion dollar grant. It's only about sheep and some gays are doing what they seem to do best and protesting/bullying anything that they decree is unfriendly to the gay cause, regardless of things like logic.

Reminds me of the time recently that gays protested American Idol for not being pro gay, timed to be during the week the show was in San Francisco. Probably just wanted special treatment for gay contestants or something.

In some ways you are right, we are already making choices regarding aborting pregnancies. I remember reading a while ago that people were worried that in China couples would start aborting pregnancies based on the sex of the child. This extends to other potential developmental problems as indicated in your friend's case.

And yes, it would be complicated to adjust this technique from sheep to humans. But this is where all of the real leg work is being done. Once they can do it to sheep, it isn't that hard to do it to humans. Don't get me wrong, it would be hard - but not as hard as you would think. Once you know you can do it to one mammal, it can be done to another.

I'm not really against the research. Even though I don't think gay sheep are really that big of a problem. But I do think there is a legitimate concern that this research could be the basis for applying this to humans. Unfortunately that concern needs to be addressed by the government, and governments are not always the quickest to grasp the consequences of new technologies.
