sideshow Posted November 11, 2006 Report Posted November 11, 2006 Does anyone else believe that this should be a National Holiday? I think that everything should close down and we should respect those that sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Veterans fought for justice, and in my opinion not closing stores is a disgraceful act of consumerism that denigrates their memory. I believe that the political will exists to move in this direction. Lets all salute those that came before us. Quote

Drea Posted November 11, 2006 Report Posted November 11, 2006 same here in BC. My son is all handsome in his cadet uniform this morning -- he'll be on parade today. IMO all young people should have to participate in one way or another -- to assure no one ever forgets. My heart goes out to all veterans young and old. Quote ...jealous much? Booga Booga! jdobbin Posted November 11, 2006 Report Posted November 11, 2006 The malls open at 1:00 pm today................................... Veterans themselves asked for the retail act to changed to 1 pm rather than the whole day. For all other workers it is a day off to remember. Quote

jdobbin Posted November 11, 2006 Report Posted November 11, 2006 Only from Manitoba west and the Territories for some reason. The veterans were quite strong in Manitoba. They originally wanted everything to come to a stop and it did. At one time, there was not a restaurant, a retail business or anything else opened on the day of Remembrance. Quote

Wrong, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia also celebrate Rememberance Day as a Public Holiday. I believe it is only Quebec and Ontario that does not honour our veterans with a public holiday. Quote
jdobbin Posted November 11, 2006 Report Posted November 11, 2006 But why only the western provinces? The veteran's took a different tack in Ontario. They believed the day should be like any other and that it would be more dramatic to have everything come to a stop for two minutes wherever you were. You can judge for yourself if it as effective as a public holiday. Quote
