Tories' gun bill gets green light from opposition

OTTAWA -- Liberal and New Democrat MPs suggested Tuesday they are prepared to vote for the Conservatives' bill to impose stiffer jail terms for gun crimes, apparently clearing the way for its passage in the Commons with some minor tinkering but no major overhaul.

Opposition members of the all-party justice committee, with the exception of the Bloc Quebecois, gave Justice Minister Vic Toews an easy ride as he appeared to defend the bill, which he said is designed to reduce the "scourge of gun violence that plagues our country."

Both the Liberals and the NDP, mainly in response to an increase in gun violence in Toronto and other major cities, promised during the election campaign earlier this year to increase minimum mandatory jail terms, but their remedies did not go as far as the Conservative plan for minimum sentences of 10 years for the most extreme, repeat offences.

I like coalition governments. Well written bills that appeal to most of the population pass easily. Flawed or more controversial bills get revised; require team-work/coercion to pass or they get defeated.

Another solid piece of legislation.

Another accomplishment to be touted in the next election.

This will come up in the campaign. When you are hearing all the talk of Harper's 'broken promises' this will be among the list of promises kept.

Dion is a verbose, mild-mannered academic with a shaky grasp of English who seems unfit to chair a university department, much less lead a country.

Hopefully in the next election Harper promises and income tax cut.

Good for the Liberals and NDP. They promised they'd support legislation to stiffen jail terms for gun crimes and they've delivered.
