bk59 Posted November 9, 2006 Report Posted November 9, 2006 Hmmm Torontonians voted more strongly Liberal than pretty much any other part of the country. The ads re-inforced the *scary* *scary* *scary* Harper message that only the hardline anti-Harperistas bought into. But you know that the Liberal voters in Toronto didn't buy into this patently false and misleading ad. Your post has hit on the exact reason why voters in Toronto, and everywhere else, did not buy into the ad: it was patently false and misleading. And pretty much everyone knew it. (Except for, as you say, the extreme hardline anti-Harper folks.) I do not want to generalize too much, but just look at how the vote went in the last election. Most urban centres did not vote Conservative. Why? (And this is where I don't want to paint everyone with the same brush, but I do think there are some general trends here.) Because a lot of people in urban centres do not support some of the key planks in the Conservative platform. They did not want to see the same-sex marriage debate reopened. They supported the long-gun registry - even though most wanted to see those costs contained they still wanted the registry to exist. A lot of people liked the income tax cut and preferred it to the GST cut. A lot of people wanted to see a child care program of the sort the Liberals were talking about rather than a monetary sum of the sort the Conservatives were talking about. Believe it or not, but there are valid reasons for voting for either party. And an obviously idiotic ad is not going to change the minds of too many people. Quote
Who's Doing What? Posted November 9, 2006 Report Posted November 9, 2006 Torontonians didn't buy it any more than anyone else did. That is to say, a very few people believed it, but not nearly a significant number. Just like pretty much anywhere else in the country. People in Toronto had their own, valid, reasons for not voting Conservative. Hmmm Torontonians voted more strongly Liberal than pretty much any other part of the country. The ads re-inforced the *scary* *scary* *scary* Harper message that only the hardline anti-Harperistas bought into. But you know that the Liberal voters in Toronto didn't buy into this patently false and misleading ad. I marvel at how you come to conclusions. "Toronto voted Liberal, therefore the Scary ads worked on them." So why did some NDP get elected? Quote Harper differed with his party on some key policy issues; in 1995, for example, he was one of only two Reform MPs to vote in favour of federal legislation requiring owners to register their guns. http://www.mapleleafweb.com/election/bio/harper.html "You've got to remember that west of Winnipeg the ridings the Liberals hold are dominated by people who are either recent Asian immigrants or recent migrants from eastern Canada: people who live in ghettoes and who are not integrated into western Canadian society." (Stephen Harper, Report Newsmagazine, January 22, 2001)
geoffrey Posted November 9, 2006 Report Posted November 9, 2006 Or why are Toronto people so stupid to believe such things. They do, as a fact, fall from ladders less than those from London/Windsor... who, if I recall, also voted Liberal. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...y/National/home So if falling from ladders hasn't caused the brain defects that made someone believe such stupid ads, what does? Oh wait, Windsor voted NDP... hmm... yup, brain problems from falling from ladders has caused Ontarians to vote Liberal/NDP. I've discovered the cause. SSM will be done for good. The socons in the Conservative party want to take one more kick at the cat, they will get it, the issue will be over. This is exactly what Mulroney did with abortion, and despite attacks to the contrary, the Conservatives have no intention of re-opening that debate. There will be further tax measures in the upcoming budget. The ad probably helped the Conservatives long run. The major issues in this campaign appear to be the environment, Quebec nationhood (please don't reopen the constitution) and fiscal imbalance plan....
