geoffrey Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 Is this a big celebration in the Jewish world? I notice that it's around the same time (if not the same time) as the start of Ramadan. Any connection/significance? I don't know my Jewish/Muslim religious history that well. May it bring peace and well-being for all on this Board. Happy New Year. My meat shop down the street was just packed today with celebrants buying every kosher item in sight. I got in just ahead of the big rush. Are you Jewish? Even if not, I'm glad you appreciate Kosher food. I'm not Kosher, by the way. Is this a big celebration in the Jewish world? This is the start of the "Days of Repentence" or "Days of Awe", which culminate with Yom Kippur, a 24 hour, no food, no water fast commencing this year next Sunday sunset. The period is one for repairing your relationship with G-d. People must, on their own, make peace with other people, to the extent that the sins being atoned for hurt or were directed at people. In other words, the Jewish religion requires goodness and justice, tempered by mercy, in our transactions with other people. I notice that it's around the same time (if not the same time) as the start of Ramadan. Any connection/significance? I don't know my Jewish/Muslim religious history that well. Both the Jews and the Muslims use a "lunar calendar". The Muslims use the first sighting of a crescent moon after a certain new moon (not sure which one). The Muslims often debate among themselves when the crescent moon is visible for Ramadan purposes, thus the large annual swing in when Ramadam starts. In Judaism, Rosh Hashonah is the New Moon starting the month of Tishri, which is actually the seventh month of the lunar cycle. In many respects, the Muslim religion borrows Jewish concepts and Biblical stories liberally. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone."
