Rue Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 I also hear rumbles they want to seriously consider appointing an aboriginal GG. Phil Fontaine? Elijah Harper? Ethel Blondell (only she is a Liberal so that may hurt her). Ovide Mercredi probably would laugh it off. So the reality is, if your of a certain race, you have priority? Pfft to equally, why do we bother pretending? When race is the primary reason we pick political people, or when we create a racial profile to do so, it's acting out of the utmost hypocrisy. The GG position isn't about merit. Its ceremonial. No one pretends it is anything but ceremonial and symbolic so trying to make sure it represents all kinds of cultures or ethnic groups isn't pretending, its deliberate. No one hides such criteria. Its openly discussed. The concept of a black immigrant GG was openly discussed, never hidden. Now as for Wayne Gretzky sorry, I believe you have to speak at least French or English. That rules him out. Besides come on now let's get serious. If we are going for a former hockey player, it has to be Eddy Shack. (Jean Beliveau turned it down) Quote
geoffrey Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Eddy Shack would be ok with me. Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --
fellowtraveller Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 To summarize, she has been first a student, then a civil servant for her entire life. Why would you leave out her extensive NGO and volunteer work? That was even referenced in the wiki bio you quoted, strange you'd skip it. What do you have against her? Volunteering at a shelter qualifies her as Head of State? I used to be a Cub Leader, can I be Emperor? I have nothing against her, she just seems like a nonentity. That may be part of why Martin picked her, optics plus she is a null on the Canadian scene.... It should be filled by titans, revered national icons, whose love of country is reflected in the love their country has for them She seems like a nice enough person, but she is no icon or titan. Unless you are a CBC employee or a salon separatist, nobody else in the country had heard of her before the appointment. Quote The government should do something.
fellowtraveller Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 If they were going to pick a First Nations GG - and that would be an absolutely outstanding move by Harper- my choice would be Matthew Coon Come. Quote The government should do something.
geoffrey Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 If they were going to pick a First Nations GG - and that would be an absolutely outstanding move by Harper- my choice would be Matthew Coon Come. So it's best to pick someone first by race, second by qualifications? I see, so qualifications are important. If someone ever made Coon Come the GG, I'd hope it was on qualifications first and race second, as I think that wouldn't be an unreasonable choice, far more favourable in my eyes than Jean. Personally, I'd be quite offended if I were just the token Indian GG though. But hey, I'm not Indian or GG, so what do I know, besides that in the eyes of most people here, my ethnicity denies me a position in government... how progressive you folks are... bradco Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 I prefer to think that the GG should have been: nobody... honestly its about time we do away with this joke.....what a huge waste of taxpayer money....actually nevermind, I think I should be GG. I would love the sweet mansion and to travel the world and attend fancy diplomat parties with awesome fingerfood....get smashed on free champagne...force people to stand when I enter the room and refer to me as "excellancy" the only valuable thing this istitution really does is free up time for the PM so he doesnt have to attend all these ceremonies..just send the GG. Im sure we could just get other members of cabinet to go to represent the government, or hey give one of those backbenchers something to do. How odd it would be having someone who actually represents the Canadian people's will (elected) representing them... might need some sort of legislation saying that when a minority govt loses confidence another party has the right to give the whole confidence of the house thing a go Quote

I also think that the position of Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development should be an appointed position, and that the First Nations leadership should have plenty of input in the choice. Want natives to have a real place at the table? Governor General/Head of State plus a seat in Cabinet is a great start. Quote The government should do something.

I don't want 'Natives' to have a seat at the table, half of them deny that they are even Canadian. Worse then having Jean the sovereigntist in the GG office. The portfolio you mention is appointed, all are. If your saying the government should just pick one non-elected Indian to sit in that chair, your crazy. Are we going to have to hand pick from the population a minister of energy too? I nominate Charlie Fischer, President of Nexen Inc.. He'll push the oil industry's opinion through just like an Indian minister of Indian affairs would. See my point. We don't need to play to special interests, it's racist and a waste of our time/money. Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --
jbg Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 What credintials does she have? She was a journalist... Why not have a retired general, like Australia? Any General that you have in mind? Perhaps a former Conservative candidate general? Hillyer might be a good choice, if the current one had the decency to step down. Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).
Ricki Bobbi Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Hillyer might be a good choice, if the current one had the decency to step down. Why would she step down? This is the best paying gig she has ever had, or ever will have, in her life. Treated like royalty. Not hard work. And guaranteed to get a sweet contract to write a book out of the deal when she is finished...
