Riverwind
It is possible for an outside power to create an environment where democratic government can be born even if the country has scant or no experience of democratic government before.I disagree completely: all an outside power can do is create a leadership vacuum by disposing the current gov't of a country. The outside power has limited control over what kind of gov't emerges to fill that leadership vacuum. Obviously, the outside power can try to fill that leadership vacuum itself, however, this is not a long term solution (especially if much of the population is hostile towards that outside power). Democracy can only exist in countries where the overwhelming number of people believe in that form of gov't. As I mentioned before, both Germany and Japan had prior experience with democracy and, as a result, were willing to stick with the system set up by the Americans. This is not the case in any Islamic country where Sharia law, theocratic rule and distrust of western ideas have deep cultural roots. It is extremely niave to believe that war would bring democracy to any Islamic country. If an when democracy comes to Islam it will have come from within - much like what is happening in Turkey and Indonesia.
