August1991 Posted September 14, 2024 Report Posted September 14, 2024 Both movies involve a rich white guy who chooses to die in a foreign tourist place. In one movie (Bogarde) the guy is gay; in the other (Roth) the guy is not. Visconti is a better director. The images are better. The music better. All things considered, the 1970s film world portrays better this idea of Thomas Mann of the pre-1914 world better than anything any film maker of the 2020s. It is a sad statement: current artists can't even describe themselves. To his credit, Tim Roth made me watch the movie to the end. Quote
