myata Posted August 18, 2024 Report Posted August 18, 2024 (edited) A short while back there was a prolonged discussion about the future, the role and possible impacts and consequences of the AGI technology, if it's ever brought to a feasible technological level. Of course, the topic was explored earlier in countless apocalyptic fictional (as yet) stories about runaway AI but the advent of Generative AI (better known as ChatGPT and similar) embodied the questions and brought it to the attention of the research and general communities. Artificial General Intelligence differs from the slew of AI-related technologies in uncounted applications in the modern world by the ability to apply the same or similar level of intelligence to the tasks of completely different nature, approaching in this capacity that of natural intelligent species. Move along the timeline a few months, and we may glimpse new information and arguments in the discussion. Suppose the technology approaches the level of feasibility. Also, suppose there's a successful business person, like a billionaire who came to believe that it's them who have the best, and just possibly, all of them, solutions for the world. Humanity itself, and little less. A totally new condition, obviously. Never happened before, right? For example, they may think that negotiating the future of the world with Hitlers of today could be a great idea; they may not like the government that the people elected simply because it's not good for them, as they already know; and so on. And so, with these: the technological opportunity; the resources, virtually unlimited; and a good, noble goal they could set out to develop an Artificial General Intelligent Entity that will assume the noble goal as its objective, being successful in many different tasks on the level of intelligence comparable to human (DeepBlue, Go and so on). Sounds fun, already? But wait. Another distinct characteristic of artificial systems is the temporal span and computing power: it's much shorter than human and way more powerful, many many orders of magnitude that accounts for many amazing breakthroughs, like beating human champions in chess. Now, if we connect it all together we get this: An artificial intelligent entity that begins with general intelligence comparable to human; can learn and advance itself at lightening, compared to human measure, pace; can acquire any and all necessary resources, including breaking any codes; and will pursue the noble goal no matter what, because this is how it sees its place in the universe. It's what defines its life and make it worth living, you understand? Sounds fun, don't you find? I mean before we only had the nukes and the global warming.
