Let's try something just for the hell of it.

Make up your own government, and no following party lines unless YOU TRULY BELIEVE IN YOUR CHOICES. Who would you want where? Assume that these people cannot be re-elected after their term.

PM - Preston Manning (very statesman-like)

Finance Minister - Stephen Harper (knows his numbers)

Ethics Commissioner - David Kilgour (Tory turned Liberal turned Independant turned 7-Eleven clerk; excellent representative of his constituents)

International Affairs - Carolyn Parrish (just kidding!)

Social Development - Jack Layton (mostly heartfelt guy)

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness - Paul Martin (will balance out Steve-O)

Any others?

Very interesting, I would like to do this but could you clarify it for me a little? DOes it have to be this list of people? Also I can move anyone anywhere like say for example I could take Deputy Prime minister "z" and make them say Prime Minister?

Almost no rules...past or present politician or people that are known by most. I just want to see what your government would look like and see if some of the people on this board can look past their partisan nature (we all have that nature). This obviously has no merit of any kind, except as an experiment.

Ok here it goes,

Right now I would be happy with a Conservative government but here's how it would run if it were me.

My top priorities, tax cuts, boosted military spending, Missile shield, defense, health care and the canadian economy and trade.

I like Harper where he is as PM

Deputy Prime minister would stay the same Peter Mckay

I would set a big Defense policy probably puting aprox. 25 billion towards it to start out eventually make it more. Overlooking the department I would have Liberal Chief of defense staff Rick Hillier as the Minister of DND.

Now for Finance Minister I would chose Ralph Goodale (HA joke, just kidding :P ) This is a hard one but I think monty solburg (spelt it wrong) would be a good FM Even though I don't have much background reading of him.

Health care would be at the top of my list with my Defense budget, and I would proably bring back Ujjal Dosanjh.

As international affairs I would have Jean Cretien in office (to tell the americans off :P )

Anyways I could go on with this but ill stop their.

As much as this pains me extensively (I may have to shower again after this), but you make a good point about the mighty JC. Teflon Jean, for all his shortcomings, is hell on wheels in front of a tv camera. If he would be willing to argue on points I believe in he would be very effective.

Harper has never done anything about Defense in his career, that doesn't make much sense?

And Pettigrew? Thats crazyness, I can't wait to see that bugger get beat by the Bloc in his riding.

We all know that I should be the PM, and I'll just take on all the portfolios myself, the old school Canadian politics way. Think of all the money we'd save on the Cabinet Minister's saleries.

Makes sense to me, didn't like most other candidates. Stephen Harpers has really only held the Leader portfolio and his main expirence is in Leadership of the NCC, CA, and CPC. That being said I cannot belive that Stephen Harper after leading the Alliance and the CPC and forming the policy of the reform party knows nothing about the Canadian millitary, I would say from that he has enough background. In our federal government much of the "work" is done by un-elected bureacrats so Stephen Harper does not need to have an extensive millitary back ground to hold down the position, just ideas about where he wants the millitary to be headed, which I belive he does. He is a competent enough leader and he would be someone I would trust to do something about the millitary and have enough clout to carry it out. Many people may not like Stephen Harpers Social or Fiscal Conservatism, making the millitary a perfect fit. Most people agree that we need a stronger millitary and of all the politicians out there he is one of a few he could carry it out and he brings along strong leadership abilities...so I have no problem seeign him fill the role of National Defence Minister.

And Pettigrew? Thats crazyness, I can't wait to see that bugger get beat by the Bloc in his riding.

I might have missed the whole boarding call for the I hate Pettigrew bandwagon...my only problem with him is that he appoligized for calling speratist leaders a bunch of losers. Anyways on one hand you critisize me for picking the in-expirenced Harper and then I provide you with the most expirenced man for the Job in Canada and you shoot it down the majority of Pettigrews career has been spent in the realm of international policy.

I for one am not a big fan of the Bloc, I am not a big fan of Speratists so I am not about to tell anyone that I look forward to a bloc victory anywhere I hope those bunch of losers don't win a riding at all.

I like Harper as my Prime Minister.

Then I'll let him decide whom he thinks will work well with him and his policies.

Well, what can I say? I like the platform that he's laid out....I want to see how it goes. I have no wish to let him be PM, only to tie his hands to hinder him from accomplishing his policies.

Betsy, I know you like Harper. But can you get over the party lines for a minute. What if you were PM? Who would you put where, if there were no parties period? Come on, pour another Arbour Mist, turn up Sarah M, and think back to who impressed you...and then give them a job!

We all know that I should be the PM,

Ok, I'll play this one. Grudgingly for the sake of argument I'll give you the position of PM (for now, with a reservation to depose you after another glass of wine).

Deputy Prime Minister: Black Dog - he'll balance you out.

Minister of Finance: Canuck E Stan - this position needs a sense of humour, after all!

Minister of the Environment: Eureka

Minister of Foreign Affairs: August 1991, who knows his way around the globe

Minister of National Defence: Army Guy (haven't seen him around lately, though)

Minister of Justice: Theloneous Fleabag - a great sense of right and wrong, just warped enough to keep it interesting. Or perhaps FTA Lawyer, although I haven't seen him in a while, either.

Minister of Health: no one really jumps to mind, are there nominations from the floor?

Minister of Social Development: ME!

Actually, I'd like to see Hugo as Intergovernmental Affairs, but I just checked his profile and he hasn't been on since September. For those of you who are more new to the forum, he was the biggest anarchist ever, but amazingly articulate about it - check out some of the older threads.

A gut feeling, just felt like the right position for him, although it might not be right up his ally, I didn't neccasarily like him for positions that many would see as his base. However, it is Jack Layton's base, background, and over all philophy that would make him a good justice minister. All to often we get guys that really don't know what they are doing, are not interested in doing their jobs, and are sitting in government to get a huge pention and tell people when they can talk. For most of my cabinent I was looking for people who would have a vision and set out to accomplish that, in the end it seemed logical to pick Jack Layton as one of those people and even more logical to put him in Justice because that is a fieled desperately lacking in vision and fankly in hope. with Jack Laytons recent policy anouncements on serious crime I get the impression that such a vision would not be a nightmare given Jack Layton's willigness to get tough on crimes that you need to crack down on.

"Ethics Commissioner - Deborah Grey"

Betsy, please tell me this was a joke. Deb "I took the pension anyway" Gray for ETHICS? She (now) makes the Lib's look honest.

I've changed my mind....Jack Layton for Ethics Commissioner. Now there's a winner if I ever saw one.
