So what is the real reason there won't be an election held over the holidays?

All the talk of voter backlash appears to have no basis in reality.

The last minority government brought down 'pre-maturely' was Joe Clark's in 1979.

There was talk of voter backlash at that time, yet both the Liberals and NDs improved their percentage of the vote in the ensuing election.

Here is my guess. The NDs don't really know what they want to do. The Conservatives and Bloc feel that they would make gains with an election called soon, but do not trust Layton at all. Thus, there won't be a holiday election unless Layton makes the first move, which he won't...

Anybody know how the NDs finances are looking these days?

I would look for the government to be defeated on the December 8th fiscal update. That way, none of the opposition parties has to take the first step, and short of it being a "budget" Harper can support, the Tories would probably vote against it. That could all change, of course, if Martin adjourned parliament early for Christmas.

Interesting idea, does anybody know if Martin can get away with this?

The problem with such a move is it could add more fuel to the opposition parties fire...

It would appear that Harper doesn't want to be seen to be making an opportunistic grab at the power that he so dearly craves. He appears to be trying to goad Jack Layton into calling a vote of non-confidence, because even though he's desperate for that "chance at power", he knows there will be a backlash....

On the Conservative/Alliance last attempt at tearing down the government, Harper's ratings took a nose-dive.... No basis in reality... just look a few months back, and the reality will be glaring at you....

The Conservative/Alliance doesn't trust Layton, because it appears that Layton will try to do what's in Canadian citizens' interests, rather than try to fuel his personal quest for fame and power.

Grow up and use the right party name a**hole!

Layton does what he thinks is in his best interest.

Layton is sitting on a fence screaming "Canadians love me and my royal socialist ass is so safe up here." Meanwhile, he is DYING for a deal because he knows, short of forming an NDP government, the best chance he has of pushing his left-wing agenda is to keep the Liberals in a minority government.

Don't you hate those lefties like Tommy Douglas who got health care for all of us... And those who try to protect us are just as bad, aren't they.....

Seriously err, are you comparing Tommy Douglas to Jack Layton?

Yes, in that he's the closest of all our leaders to what Tommy Douglas stood for. And right now, he's fighting to keep what Tommy fought so hard for.... Keeping our health care public.

Arresting the creepage of privatization is more important that many in this forum obviously believe. If you realistially consider the costs, overheads, profit margins, etc... you cannot escape the conclusion that a public impementation is less expensive for the same quality result.

Jack's NDP hates us working folks

What bothers me most about Layton is how he and the party he leads have turned their backs on working people.

I remember old-school union types and the people who populated the labour movement's political arm, the New Democratic Party.

And if an effete pretty-boy, silver-spoon socialist like Jack Layton had tried to crash their party, they'd have taken him out behind the nearest union hall and left his face looking like something Picasso dashed off while drunk.

The NDP used to champion working people.

Now it champions really confused guys who want to be afforded the right to use the ladies room after having their factory-issued genitals cut off and a poor substitute crafted by a doctor.

What ever happened to the NDP of yesterday?

I note that you didn't put in the part where the author explains how he has a fetish for big hairy truck drivers, and that is one of the big reasons he doesn't like Layton.

Trash like that printed in your quoted source actually doesn't deserve to be answered. It appears to be printed for extremely low-life individuals, so I can see how this might appeal to you...

blah, blah, blah....

Today's NDP champions the same causes as they always have. They put the citizens of Canada first. They champion public health care. They champion those who are left behind by our government that is drifting further and further to the right.....

Ahhh err, so typical of the silver spoon socialists who have taken over the New Democrats.

Your sneering condescion to "big hairy truck drivers" is sad. Such valuable members of our society deserve just as much respect as anybody else. Alas, the far left agenda of the party has left the big hairy truck driver out in the cold.

That is ok. The Conservative Party of Canada understands that and is working to provide the backbone of the transportation system of our country a place under its big tent.

Shoop,

You are sooooooo right, it was printed for low lifes and it does appeal to them because at one time the NDP used to be a party that cared for the low lifes but under Jack Layton has changed to being the National DeBonk Party.

Err has forgotten that the NDP roots were the low lifes and not the "grass"roots.

There was no sneering at all. I merely commented on the author's apparent fetish seemed to be one of his reasons for not liking Layton. He's free to have attractions to whomever he wishes... However, it shouldn't be a motivating factor in selection of who to vote for..... I think that testifies to his bad judgement...

The NDP is a party that always has championed the causes of the majority of Canadians, working, poor, etc... not just ones of a particular mental state...

The term "low-life" refers more to a mental state of being than a fiscal one... There are people who fit the description of "low-life" in nearly every fiscal category. I neither know nor care about your fiscal status. However, your mental capacity is painfully obvious by your posts and choice of reading material.....

So you champion the cause of the 'majority of Canadians' yet you attack an author because he has a fetish for 'big hairy truck drivers'. Why single out this group of Canadians. Truck drivers fill a needed role in our society.

Odd how truck drivers find more of a home in the Conservative Party of Canada these days...

Your CCF/NDP dictionary has steered you wrong ERR, here are some real world definitions of low-life:

n. pl. low·lifes also low·lives (-lvz)

A person of low social status or moral character:

Slang Definition: A person with bad habits or a questionable lifestyle; someone who doesn't amount to much in society.

You tell these "low-lifes" that their low social status "refers more to a mental state of being than a fiscal one...",

I'm sure the CCF/NDP membership would love to hear how you define of a good portion of their members.
