You're right lovecanada. I was just trying to make the point that we can't always have it both ways. Some of our laws do violate or contradict common sense parenting. I guess it ultimately comes down to doing the best we can for our kids.

I agree Newbie, but is it too much to ask for the government to support us parents? Give us the choice of who looks after our pre-school children? It really ticked me off when filing my income taxes that we could not claim all our child care expenses because only the lowest income person could claim them. These were legitimate expenses...actual money paid out to a care provider.. that could not be totally claimed.

Dear lovecanada,

Do the police not have any common sense and ability to judge a true offense when it occurs?
No, they only have the law.
I agree, parents have to be the ones responsible for their children. But, what about the 14 year old child who has a 30 year old friend that they CONSENT to have sex with??
Then I suggest the parents have done a poor, or excellent job, raising their children, depending on what they believe to be acceptable.

Would the Special Olympics Committee disqualify kids born with flippers from the swimming events?

I look at my little 12 year old and try to tell him that he can discuss sex issues with me but he still blushes when I name a certain girl he likes... he is so innocent it breaks my heart. How can we say he's ready to understand CONSENTUAL sex at 14? He still won't be shaving? Who will stand up for our young people?

Oh and who is going to turn in all these kissing kids?? Their parents? Are the police going looking for young kissing offenders? Do the police not have any common sense and ability to judge a true offense when it occurs? Are our judges so misguided that they are going to put a 14 year old in jail for kissing? It's not a logical argument.

Might not be logical but it would be law if Casson had his way.

Hi RB. Been a long time.....

If a girl puts up a sign saying "I want sex", she will have no trouble finding someone to accomodate her wishes, no matter where she chooses to advertise......

I would be interested in seeing the actual transcripts.

I mean if the guys were actively trying to lead a kid on, knowing fully well she's 14, it's pretty disgusting.

If they simply got on line and said "Hey, I'm young, pretty, and hot-to-trot, come and get me big boy", then it's still pretty sad, but it sure makes the outcome even more predictable.

Either way, it's a sad commentary.

(Quote edited for brevity)

I think they were going to post the transcripts at Perverted Justice

Thanks for the link, but they're having some website problems at the moment, so the transcripts cannot be accessed.

How would a girl put up a sign that said "I want sex"? Then what signals would boys give out that they wanted to have sex

I was waxing rhetorical, but seeing as this is about internet predation, it would be easy.

Picture a message board. Picture this message from "CutiePie" (message and character are fictional)......"Hey boys, I'm lookin' for some hot action. I'm 14, and I want to get hoy and sweaty with an experienced man".

Seems pretty obvious.

As for the boys, they don't need to put up a sign. Boys are always ready, always willing, and just waiting for the opportunity.

Kind of like fish in a bowl waiting for their food.

I think most of these politicians are so old that they are myopic in their vision of setting standards, and lagging behind a perspective in the damage that technology can cause - their frame of reference is their 40 year old kids that did not deal with technology

Like any tool, the internet is a two-edged sword. It's benefits are enormous, but the means by which it enables various sorts of crime are also considerable.

Predation is indeed a problem, but there's little we can do about "consenting adults", which, apparently, a 14-year-old is.

The best defense is to educate our kids well.

I need another coffee

I asked my kid about this chatting business and hot action, she did know much about such conversations. I am distressed that these prowlers are lurking for the innocent kids.

You are right about parent monitoring and education - I allow MSN chats on weekend, we use the MSN 'cause you have to add folks to get on the list. Nothing is safe but at least I know the folks on the list.

Excellent job, well done, even though that is just my opinion. Sadly, too many parents use (or let) the television or computer to 'babysit' (and also basically raise, instill a sense of morals and justice, and program information to be regarded as 'gospel truth').

Yes,

But that is what our society has become. It is true, fleabag, what you say, but to change what we do here today would mean that we would have to change the attitudes of most of the citizens in this nation.

The young ones are storms of hormones and temptations.

So my kid has responsiblities, we manage with rules that my daughter came up with, if the rules are broken she also came up with the consequences.

For now I am glad that she considers going out with me first over her friends

But it doesn't stop them from trying tricks - last Friday I dropped the lot off at the movies and they bought tickets for SAW an "R" movie - later they called to say the folks at the movies need identification so they were catching a later show "chicken little"

So I am glad someone is doing their job to help us parents - the kids look much older, but also there are still kids pushing buttons and testing limits
