Riverwind
I was looking at a map of Hans Island and realized that having control of the island would provide control of passage thru the strait between Greenland and Ellesmere because of the rules regarding territorial waters. I was thinking of one these possible resolutions: 1) Blow up the island (or at least push it under sea level). That would result in the boundary reverting back to the sea boundary thru middle of the straight that Denmark and Canada agreed to in the 70s. 2) Draw a line right thru the middle of the island (much like Pt. Robert's south of Vancouver). This should ensure that each nation has control of exactly one half of the strait. Any thoughts? Downside for Canada? theloniusfleabag
Dear Sparhawk, 2) Draw a line right thru the middle of the island (much like Pt. Robert's south of Vancouver). This should ensure that each nation has control of exactly one half of the strait. As Solomon would have said, "Cut that baby in half!" Otherwise, we'd be faced with confronting 'just what land ownership is', and nobody wants that out in the open. Sticking a flag in something doesn't mean ownership, even when it is something so remotely desirable that I had never heard of it until recently.Or, 1) Blow up the island (or at least push it under sea level). That would result in the boundary reverting back to the sea boundary thru middle of the straight that Denmark and Canada agreed to in the 70s.the island could be an ICBM target practice site, and any country can use it. (I'd like to see Martin declare that!)
canadian_conservative
those are extremly good ideas but Denmark won't make it that easy.
Riverwind
those are extremly good ideas but Denmark won't make it that easy. Why? I assume Denmark has the same interest as Canada - ensuring that they have equal access to the strait.

Exactly dennmark is going to make it hard because they want the straight as bad as we do. By the way thats the only reason they are trying to take are island. Maybe I'll contact the one of the mining companies....

cybercoma
The United States will just try to claim it as their own and we can't be having that....this is our SOVEREIGNTY we're talking about here.... They'll likely make up some story about oil being in the rock...and avoid blowing it up.
