If your job were to be replaced by a high-tech machine, would you be happy... then you could take every day off... wouldn't that be cool... You could spend all day on the internet spreading you wisom to the world.

It is my, and every other person's PERSONAL responsibility to make sure we are valuable to society. The measure of if we are successful in this is if we are paid for our employment. If we cease to be valuable, (for example if we are replaced by a machine), the onus is on us to adapt by aquiring skills and experience which would make us employable.

To answer your question, no I wouldn't be happy, but I would consider it my problem to adapt. It is neither the machine's problem nor that of the employer who has purchased the machine.

PS:  I have nothing against Home Depot, but I will not use their self-checkout job stealers...

Yes, and perhaps you should load your purchases in your horse-drawn carriage because you know those new-fangled cars, they just steal jobs from the buggy makers.

uh, there's actually a horse and buggy parking shed at the Waterloo Home Depot...

this post made me think of that...

I was talking about the "auto-checkout" lines that are replacing jobs in Home Depot,

Can you please stop spreading lies. You have absolutely no proof and are unable to show proof that people have lost their jobs at Home Depots because of auto-checkouts. It hasn't happened and it's not going to happen.

Let me explain something to you. There are 17 registers at the front of many of our stores. In the middle of a busy Saturday afternoon when the store is running full tilt, there may be 10 registers open at the front at once. So what if they take out some of the registers that aren't being used and put in do it yourself counters?

Someone with a large order of lumber, roll of carpet, bags full of nuts and bolts, special order forms, HD card payments, patio stones, etc. etc. etc. are not going to use a self-checkout.

What it does is allow the person who has a hammer, a shovel, a hanging basket, get through the lines without having to wait behind that customer that has 573 plumbing fittings.

NOT A SINGLE HOME DEPOT ASSOCIATE HAS LOST HIS OR HER JOB BECAUSE OF SELF-CHECKOUTS.

So please, just stop spreading the lies.

err, there is no reason for a human to do what a machine can do quicker, easier, and cheaper. In the case of the self-checkout. It serves a purpose for those who have a few simple items to check-out. I use both the self-checkout and the manned cashier depending upon the lenght of the line and what I have purchased.

You should consider becoming a Luddite. You'd fit right in. I take that  back, maybe you already are one.

Man you are naive. If your job were to be replaced by a high-tech machine, would you be happy... then you could take every day off... wouldn't that be cool... You could spend all day on the internet spreading you wisom to the world.

The job lost to the high-tech machine just created several jobs producing that machine and maintaining it.

Not nearly as many though. The reason we are able to have so many service jobs, like cashiers in home depot is because of our super labour effiecient manufacturing industry.

And how long will it be until these checkout machines are made by a production line, with 10 supervisors producing 100 machines?

Just like ATM machines have nothing to do with the fact that banks now run with half of the staff that we once were familiar with....

So if there weren't the "self-checkout" stations, would they have, perhaps 12 cashiers instead of 10 ???

Of course not... But they might not have to replace somenone who quits, or who comes to work too late a few times... I think I understand..

Care to explain how banks now have their highest level of employment, since according to you they fired half their staff.

You're making assumptions that simply aren't true. I work for the corporation and I can tell you unequivoally that there have been no job losses (or since you like to think we don't replace the cashiers), ANY REDUCTION IN STAFFING HOURS due to the SCOs.

Self-checkouts have acatually increased business (customers don't dump carts when the lineups are too long)and reduced shrink (people don't stop and say "the cashier made a mistake, too bad for them" when they scan their own stuff) which in turn has increased staffing hours.

You're going to need a muzzle for your ass if you keep talking out it because you have no idea what you're saying. Bank Tellers and cashiers are different things, not to mention bank teller jobs were replaced by financial sales people who sell service packages to banking customers. There weren't nearly as many of those before they had ATMs. As renegade said, banks actually employ MORE people now.

It's a moot pointi though, I don't know as much about bank tellers as I do my own business and I can tell you that my business will not be firing or failing to replace cashiers due to the convenience added system of SCOs.

... did you mean assumptions that you choose not to believe...

And why might they be too long... because there's not enough staff ??
You're going to need a muzzle for your ass
Why, are you going to come around sniffing???

And what part of the business do you specialize in... Draperies ?, plumbing, lumber... or business management....

Your loyalty to your employer is admirable, but you have to draw lines and look at reality. Automated tellers replaced tellers... Automated checkouts will replace checkout staff...
