The thing I have learned about conservatives, Mark-baby, is this: they seem to LIKE being tortured. Misery, despair, pessimism - that's what gets their collective rocks off. They ENJOY being miserable. I swear to God.What gives, you ask? Well, all true conservatives, John Diefenbaker explained to me one day, are very suspicious of happiness and contentment. They think it is a trick. When something good happens to a conservative, he (because it is almost always a he) says: "Something bad is going to happen." When something bad in fact happens, the conservative cheers up, and says: "See? I told you so." Therein lies the rub, Mark. Canadians have built-in bullshit detectors. They strongly suspect that - deep within your black little hearts - you conservatives don't LIKE Canada. You don't LIKE Canadians. You don't LIKE anything about modern Canada, in fact - the Charter of Rights, health care, navel-piercing, sunny days. You want everyone to be as MISERABLE as you are. So here's my free advice, Old Bean: start talking, and looking, like you like the place. Then the voters will let you run it. That's it, Mark. Free advice, and I'm not kidding around, either. Being a conservative, you will now mock the advice, or ignore it. (From your perch on the Opposition benches, that is.) One may like or dislike Kinsella however sometimes he is bang on and this is one of the times he hit the nail on the head. Quote
