theloniusfleabag Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Dear Pateris, I mean, if Canada had had 30,000 troops and the ability to get them there, Canada alone could have stopped what happened in Rwanda.Sadly, Canada was not 'deemed to have the ability' by the budget dept, nor could it secure from the members of the UN the authorization to actually fire a gun. Pateris Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 thelonius, If Canada had had the military wherewithall to stop what happened in Rwanda, we could have simply said to the UN: We are going to stop this while the rest of you dither... and if you don't agree - go ahead and stop us. Do you think ANY country on the security council would have actually taken any action to stop us? Not a chance. Quote
theloniusfleabag Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Dear Pateris, If Canada had hadIf.to stop what happened in Rwanda,That would have meant picking sides in an 'uncivil war' where the lesser of two evils was still pretty bad. We then would have had to engage in 'nation-building' by fighting against both sides and imposing a new gov't on both. The alternative we chose, to ask other nations to commit troops and political will, was evidently the wrong one, as they all (almost all) refused.
