The Architects Of Defeat

At the breakfast, Carville, together with chief campaign strategist Bob Shrum and pollster Stan Greenberg, seemed intent on one thing — salvaging their reputations.

They blamed the public for not responding to John Kerry’s message on the economy, and they blamed the news media for distracting voters from this critical message with headlines from that pesky war in Iraq. “News events were driving this,” said Shrum. “The economy was not driving the news coverage.”

But shouldn’t it have been obvious that Iraq and the war on terror were the real story of this campaign? Only these Washington insiders, stuck in an anachronistic 1990s mind-set and re-fighting the ’92 election, could think that the economy would be the driving factor in a post-9/11 world with Iraq in flames. That the campaign’s leadership failed to recognize that it was no longer “the economy, stupid,” was the tragic flaw of the race.

I agree with the author of this articvle. it is time for some serious bloood-letting at the Democratic party headquarters. It is time to move on from the Clintonites - they were fine in a different era, but the world has passed them by.

Good advice here for the Democrats, but are they smart enough to listen?

Learn How to Lose

It should be clear to almost everyone by now that the normal rules of operation in Congress will be ignored for at least the next four years. The Democrats are not going to be partners in government and they have to learn to act with that in mind. They have to forget about crafting coalitions and working with the President and start acting like an opposition party.

What does being an opposition party mean? An opposition's job is not to stop the government from doing things. An opposition has only one job--to sell a set of alternative policies to the voters. Why? Because your goal is to win the next election. And the only way to win the next election is to learn how to lose battles.

Frankly, I thought Kerry was an operative from the very beginning. Howard Dean should have represented the Vichy Democrats. Kerry ran an amazingly gutless campaign, but I was most amazed at the speed with which he surrendered.

I think any Americans who plot a 2008 victory with the Democrats are fools. They need to focus on local political offices, third parties and fixing the Democratic Party before they try to use it in battle again.
