Big Guy Posted August 15, 2014 Report Posted August 15, 2014 I am not an economist nor pretend to understand international trade negotiations. It does bother me when Canadian governments, any government, only informs its citizens of a trade deal after it has been made. Information about this EU deal leaks out in drabs and makes the overall picture even more complicated. This latest leak fits that mold; http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2014/08/14/canadaeu_trade_deal_concessions_will_hurt_buylocal_strategies.html This is going to tie the hands of federal, provincial and municipal to buy local or even Canadian. There are different triggers but it is going to be difficult to protect Canadian jobs in the bidding process. I assume that any major project might be broken into much smaller projects to keep the cost for any individual one under the cost trigger but we know there will be court challenges. Just who is this EU trade deal going to help more – the EU or Canada? Just who is this EU trade deal going to help more – the EU or Canada? Actually Harper and Co. announced this "deal" some months ago as a sone deal when it was anything but. Of course he couldn't announce any details because they were still being negotiated. They seem to have a habit of jumping the gun, usually when they need to get the latest scandal off the headlines or out of QP. It was only recently that Germany gave the deal the nod. They had been holdouts for reasons that I have not heard or read about but I assume more negotiations were required. As to who it will benefit, I like you am not an economist so I guess we'll have to defer to the experts. Quote
