Increased spending caused the majority of the deficit. So either the opposition saved the economy by forcing Canada into a deficit or they just forced Canada into a deficit and Canada's economy performed well in spite of the opposition's spending demands.

I personally think the economy would have done well without the forced stimulus spending and we'd be in an even better budgetary position if it weren't for the opposition's political games.

How much is majority of the deficit? Sounds like a lose term to give an impression of an greater amount.

The thing that kills me is that the conservatives here blame the majority opposition MP's for the deficit, then pat themselves on the back for the safety net the increased spending provided throughout our economy.

Want to know who the real hero is here?

1CDN$=.90US$=increase manufacture exports/jobs!

But the conservatives don't want to talk realty, just conservative fairy tails that actually worsened the economy!

No, they weren't.

Depending on how you look at it, we were never out of deficit, even before Harper took the helm. Sure, Martin posted official surpluses, but when the Conservatives came to power, there were billions in unpaid spending obligations. The Health Care Accord alone was $25 billion.

Umm, what? No. Even if unpaid, those obligations were funded. Edited by Smallc

They certainly were. Took 'em 2 years to blow what Martin handed them. Just in time for the complete meltdown for sure. But they had already blown the bank.

The US entered recession Q4 2007 and our revenue stopped meeting projections somewhere thereabouts. The real substantial drop started happening Q2 2008. There were no deficits before then.
