cybercoma Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 (edited) In violation of conflict of interest rules Leona Aglukkaq and Shelly Glover have recently held fundraisers, which were attended by the very organizations and people who receive funds from their departments. In other words, the Conservative Party has taken taxpayers dollars and is laundering it into the party's bank account through fundraiser events held by their cabinet ministers. Those attending the event have received money from the government and are then donating money to the Conservative Party through the tickets they purchase for the fundraisers. So on top of the never-ending election campaign that has included a multi-million dollar ad campaign for government programs, the government is now funnelling taxpayers' dollars into their party through these fundraisers. http://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/guests-at-fundraiser-honouring-aglukkaq-get-funding-from-her-department-1.1660606 Edited January 30, 2014 by Charles Anthony fixed type in link Quote
On Guard for Thee Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 What kinda worries me with these things is they think we must be stupid enough not to catch on. Of course as it turns out, no matter how stupid we may be, we do catch on which indicates that in fact they are stupider, All the while we are paying their wages! Oh well, the current government has provided ample work to keep a lot of RCMP officers employed. Quote
cybercoma Posted January 29, 2014 Author Report Posted January 29, 2014 The fact is that they still enjoy the support of people who elected them to put an end to these kinds of backhanded tactics. Quote

Keepitsimple Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 Must be a slow news day.......but I see it didn't stop the usual suspects from their breathless posts....there's nothing in the article that puts the following in doubt and hey, this wasn't a $1000 perplate dinner - it was a hundred bucks. The article is a bunch of baloney.... Late Tuesday, Aglukkaq’s office insisted the minister followed conflict of interest rules, saying anyone who benefitted from her department did not pay for a ticket and were simply invited guests. "Care has been taken not to solicit or accept funds from lobbyists or departmental stakeholders,” Jennifer Kennedy, Aglukkaq’s director of communications, said in an email to CTV News. "The Nunavut Electoral District Association operates a rigorous screening procedure, both before and after events, to ensure that only appropriate donations are accepted." WWWTT Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 KeepItSimple, have you considered changing your name to KeepItUnethical? Cheap shot there buddy. But anyways, if the beneficiaries are only guests, then it's hard to pin any conflict of interest on anyone. I personally got sick of the whole political sub culture that revolves around soliciting political donations. Something has got to change with that. In the meantime I wouldn't put any faith in the conservatives or liberals changing this since they created the system we have now. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! cybercoma Posted January 29, 2014 Author Report Posted January 29, 2014 We're talking about cabinet ministers soliciting donations from people who receive funding from the ministers' departments. It's completely unethical and if it's not illegal, it should be. Quote

It's completely unethical and if it's not illegal, it should be. Section 2(d) of the charter clearly states freedom of association. It must be established first if these alleged guests made political donations, and then, so what? Keep in mind cybercoma that I am in part playing the devil's advocate here. I have seen this conflict in the NDP as well, or lack of at the Ontario provincial level when supporting unions.( but that could all change soon seeing how unions are starting to surge in popularity in Canada!) Topaz Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 In my view, until voters stop being so "the only party" view and vote what is actually good for the country, we will have parties in the PMO as the one is there now. US vs THEM is not going the country any good. Quote

Anyone that falls into your "unethical" category was invited as a non-paying guest.....they tried to catch all of them beforehand but if not, they reviewed donors afterward. There was a process in place to avoid exactly what you are accusing them of. Edited January 29, 2014 by Keepitsimple Quote Back to Basics
