AlienB Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 (edited) Lac-Mégantic derailment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuVDczYz6JQ strangely occurred around the same time as the announcement of the pipeline on transcanada between Alberta and new Brunswick. There have been a few other small scale incidences. The thing that scares me most about conversion of transcanada's gas pipleine to oil, or one or two of the tubes is that transcanada's pipeline isn't secure. There was even an explosion on this line a year or two ago, and the entire thing has been sabotaged, from what I have seen of it. It really scares me to think that pipe sections go under water in major rivers up here... the thing is a death trap and response services would take hours. There needs to be heavier security better safegaurds and insurances that these things won't leak into the waterways like kalamazoo. There is major activity and development ongoing but the federal and provincial governments have shown zero interest in protecting the environment from accidents, and criminal acts. It is completely irresponsible. The water up here is clean enough to drink out of the river, one spill will kill all wildlife around here. While development is great if done responsibly, these things are ancient, and built by the mafia, they need to present a plan that actually is SAFE. Dear god, there is no safety in these peoples minds, and the government is turning a blind eye. Now 40 people have been incinerated, and northern alberta has been flooded with both oil and water. The government needs to wake the hell up. The safety measures arn't enough! Edited July 7, 2013 by AlienB Quote
MadX Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 People have no value to Harper's government. Only if they are rich and are donors to his party. Weird coincidence that this accident occurs right when Harper is pushing to get the pipeline developed. I don't think Harper's government purposely caused it but they were negligent in allowing only one engineer on the ill-fated train. Nothing will come out of this disaster. A few people might be charged but they will only receive a slap on the write. Fifty people incinerated means nothing to Harper. I don't think the man has a conscience. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2013/07/09/ottawa_okayed_having_only_one_engineer_on_illfated_train.html Quote http://www.antiharper.com
Keepitsimple Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 (edited) If - and I repeat IF - this was caused because the engineer did not set the handbrakes properly - then it's pretty hard to foresee regulations that could protect against incompetence. Reminds me of the Walkerton tragedy in Ontario where ecoli bacteria leaked into the city's wells. Although some blame was unfairly placed on the Mike Harris government - it was the local water inspectors - Frank and Stan Koebel, drinking on the job and substituting tap water for the well water they were SUPPOSED to be testing. How could someone see that coming? Regulations can only go so far. The next step is best practices and procedures by companies that focus on the regulations - and more. But in the final analysis, you have to trust that people will do their jobs competently. Edited July 11, 2013 by Keepitsimple Quote Back to Basics

We were told by good authority (such as McGuinty's Opposition Liberals, for one) that it was ALL Mike Harris' fault! Apparently, he not only bought the booze that got Frank and Stan drunk but put a gun to their heads to make them falsify the tests! Although never proven, there were dark rumours that Steven Harper had hired mercenaries to run undercover missions to keep the pressure on the Koebels, masterminded by...you guessed it! A younger (but already thoroughly evil) Rob Ford! If you've ever worked in a management capacity, with regards to human safety then you don't joke about such things so easily. People died because of a foolhardy plan, executed by a know-nothing premier who thought he was good at business, but was squarely blamed in a judicial enquiry. Really, Canada is going downhill because of people who don't take responsibility for their opinions or their actions, or of those they support as evidenced by this post.
