Guest Peeves Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 You come across an an apologist ...until the very end. It makes sense . Unless you subscribe to the notion that stopping a car is reasonable at certain times of the day and night. Biking on a sidewalk is illegal. You are sluffing off the danger a bicyclist has to the pedestrian. Is that fair? No it isnt. If it is impossible to get there, then that is the city planners fault. ITs almost impossible to get anywhere at certain times of th day for car drivers. Cars are freaking annoying when you are on a bike.See point above. While true, a headlamp is required to ride at night. A motorcycle is hard to see at night too. So the issue is car drivers in this case? I agree. Nail meet hammer. Near here,.. Last evening after dusk dark...9 p.m. an 89 yr. old riding a bike was struck by the side mirror of a passing car. Now, I'm certainly prepared to blame the car driver, but.........? I'm yet to hear if he was wearing white, had a light, and was fully competent at that age to be on two wheels. Call me jaundiced , but this was on a high volume vehicular road. Perhaps he had a death wish? Quote

At night I have front and rear lights and bright clothing. I still had a guy on a sidestreet come all the way over to the left and nearly run headon over me until the last minute, just as I was getting ready to take a dive over the curb. If riders don't take preventative measures, the part of the responsibility lies on them if they get hit, but even when they do, as you can see, they still get hit. Quote

Car drivers need to improve and bicyclists need to be more visible. What about if it was a road that did not have sidewalks and this old guy was a pedestrian? I have been hit twice by cars, once while hitchiking (you now that was a loooong time ago) and once while biking when the mirror of a Honda hit me, church lady driving......and for me the worst time to be on a bike is when church is about to start or when it lets out.
