What happens under a Conservative Gov't.

Social policy for the rich

This is madness.

Reid is saying the most appropriate way to handle a shortfall in public funding for universities is to make students pay more of the bill — but that the only students who should be made to pay more for education are the ones who can least afford it.

Because an increase in Quebec's sacrosanct tuition fees — which for years have been set arbitrarily lower than in almost any other Canadian jurisdiction — would send student groups pouring into the streets, Reid prefers to increase the debt load on the most disadvantaged students rather than making affluent students, who so far haven't needed financial assistance, pay more from their own pockets.

This corner likes to jump to the conclusion that politicians who set bad policy are stupid. I'm told Reid is anything but. So the only conclusion is that he has calculated the odds and decided that soaking the poor will cause him less hassle than a policy of making the richest beneficiaries of a university education dig a little deeper into their silk-lined pockets. I suspect that, as a matter of crass political calculation, he has it exactly right.

But the social damage of this cretinous policy, which is replicated with variations in almost every other part of the country, is so obscene that Reid and the Charest government should be made to take some hit for it.

Yup, this is what one gets when one elects a Conservative premier. Unbelievable! When are Canadians going to wake up and stop voting in these politicians who don't represent their interests.

I suppose Charest thinks that because he is a federalist premier he can get away with whatever policies he wishes.

It is almost tempting to go back to Quebec for the next provincial election so I can vote against this sick government. :(
