Boges Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 It's not the most popular sport in Canada but there is a Canadian team(Crappy one), a few Canadian players. It is a sport invented by a Canadian. Things aren't looking good for an NBA season this year. They've already canceled the first two weeks of the season. Same stuff with any labour dispute. Players want more, Owners are crying poor. When you compare the NBA to say the NFL, the owners have a point. Marginal NBA player can make upwards of $10 million a season while some of the best young NFL players don't even make a million, in a sport where the average career is much shorter and the revenues are much larger. The Owners have themselves to blame for that however. The NHL lockout has done absolutely nothing to curb player salaries. The Salary Cap has gone up exponentially since since the lockout and the minimum salary is difficult for some of the lower tiered teams to meet, especially in this economy. So who's going to miss Professional Basketball if the season is cancelled? Quote
fellowtraveller Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 The NHL lockout has done absolutely nothing to curb player salaries. Untrue, the hard cap has limited both team and individual salaries. What the rising cap means is simply that more teams are generating more revenue, which would indicate that gaining more cost certainty from the strike/lockout has resulted in financial benefits for both union and owners. The NFL is the envy of pro sports. The NBA players are resiting any moves towards hard caps, not surprisingly. But they will 'lose' the strike/lockout, and win financially eventually. Big, big egos at work here.......
