Topaz Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Hockey player Syd Crosby won't be back to play hockey for awhile. He's doing a press conference right now and the timing of his return is going to be up in the air for a while. The game of hockey is too violent and if this is how the game is going to be played then more guys are going to have life-time injuries or die from them, then maybe the game should be stopped. Outrage to do this, of course, but is the hockey organization going to get tougher on its contact rules? I can understand what Crosby is going through because my own son fell early this summer and has a concussion and has the headaches, his head hurts to comb his hair and I can see were depression comes in, with the constant pain. I hope the specialist can do more on his next visit but I've read these things can take months and years to heal. http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2011/09/07/sp-nhl-penguins-crosby.html Quote
Sir Bandelot Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 (edited) I hope he will be back, but I respect his decision to be cautious. There is too much at stake for him to come back early. Besides, the game is too violent now and accidents like his and worse are inevitable. The way the rules are, it's just a waiting game. It's only a matter of time before someone gets permanently incapacitated, or killed. Sydney Crosby should make the league pay, and not risk his life for mere entertainment of beer sodden masses, who know little about this game thenselves. Oh by the way, FU Don Cherry. jacee Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Just another broken down racehorse, likely pumped with oxycontin and soon to be found wandering the mean streets slobbering on corners for loonies for his next fix. Yay Canada Quote
fellowtraveller Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 or die from them, did somebody die from playing hockey recently? Quote The government should do something.
guyser Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 (edited) Sid will be back. He loves the game and it loves him. He is a rich man for playing and there isnt a person here who would turn down that money to do something else for far less. Me included. The game is not 'too violent' , unless you were born after the Broad Street Bullies finished playing. The equipment plays a large part of the injuries we see. It has become quite solid leading to no 'give' when doling out a check.Old should pads were cotton with a basic plastic cap, now its molded and rigid w no give. For someone to say FU Don Cherry, when he has been leading the charge to amend the equipement means you either dont listen to him, or dont watch his 'Corner' since he has been on this for years The concussions have always been a part of the game, we only now understand the ramificatoions much better and keep the players out that much longer. 20 yrs ago, Sid would have been in camp when it opens next week . I have suffered far more concussions than I know , having played at the penultimate level back when these things were not understood very well, spent night(s) in the hospital only to be back playing the very next day. And numerous times not even missing a shift, although I knew I should. Sometimes I wonder what effect it has on me today (insert joke here)and how it could have been better, or worse . Who knows. Hopefully Sid's issue will open the eyes and minds of those who are in charge of the game and allow for some changes and outright rule amendments (equipment) going forward. But as we have seen from the likes of Boston's Savard and probably Lindros too, some people get them quite easily, some not at all.(Tie Domi anyone?) Edited September 7, 2011 by guyser Quote

dre Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 did somebody die from playing hockey recently? No its a relatively safe sport. But its a contact sport, and when you play contact sports you will have injuries. Ironically the biggest safety problem in the league regarding concussions is the safety gear itself. The players wear thick plastic caps on their shoulders and elbows instead of the soft leather pads they wore 15 years ago. The other problem is that the league has tried to step in and ban a lot of the hits that cause injuries. This results in players thinking the rules will protect them, and they dont keep their heads up... they dont look out for themselves. If you wanna fix the problem undo every single thing the NHL has done since 1990 and roll back the gear worn by players to what was worn in the late 80's. Quote I question things because I am human. guyser Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 (edited) Ya so we need dumber racehorses with thicker skulls and a high tolerance for Oxycontin/heroin. Judging by your responses in this section, I nominate you. Couldnt have a thicker skull or be dumber by saying Sid will be " wandering the mean streets slobbering on corners for loonies for his next fix. " Sid already has enough money for life. It's not the equipment: It's the hits. FU DON CHERRY! I will bet you never played the game. The hits are the same, relative to the physical prowess and athleticism of the current players It is the equipm, ent that causes many of the injuries. Don Cherry is correct in this regard.
