Guest Derek L Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Also, I think I'd want Leona Aglukkaq, in this case... and then the Ministry of Health can go to the new conservative MP that has a medical degree and a history in the health sector (I think she's from Quebec?) You're thinking Kellie Leitch(sp?), she took Helena Guergis's seat. Quote
Posc Student Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Harper doesn't pick the speaker (of the House - the Senate is his choice), and has no more say than any other MP. The speaker may be voted on by MPs but who do you think tells those MPs who to vote for? Quote
Smallc Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 The speaker may be voted on by MPs but who do you think tells those MPs who to vote for? No one. It's a secret ballot. They can vote for whoever they want. Quote

Topaz Posted May 4, 2011 Author Report Posted May 4, 2011 I heard they are going back on May30th, so we'll have to watch QP and see how its done and who gets it. Quote
Topaz Posted May 30, 2011 Author Report Posted May 30, 2011 So now we know the House will return June 2nd and there they will pick a new Speaker which of course, will be a Tory. In the following article, it states depending who Harper picks for the Speaker's job will show how he aims to govern. I just hope that its someone who can be very fair-minded in every way or they may find themselves being talked about in the media a lot and QP will probably be worse than with the former Speaker. http://www.thehilltimes.ca/page/view/korski-05-30-2011 Quote

Dave_ON Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 No one gets nominated for the position. All MPs that are not in Cabinet or party leaders are eligible. They actually have to withdraw their name to not be on the ballot. There is a secret vote, and so the house will decide. Actually if I'm not very much mistaken ALL 308 MP's are eligible for the position of speaker. It is a normal course of action that those mentioned withdraw their names from the running for obvious reasons. At least nine MPs are in the running, but the names of all 308 MPs are on the ballot unless they have indicated by 6 p.m. Wednesday that they don’t want to stand for the job. source : http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2011/06/01/pol-speaker-election.html Quote Follow the man who seeks the truth; run from the man who has found it. -Vaclav Haval-
Dave_ON Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 I know... somewhere though I heard that it's usually an opposition MP so that the opposition has a reduced vote. Nope, because in the case of a deadlock, as we saw with Martin's narrow confidence vote, the speaker casts the tie breaking vote.
