bloodyminded Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 (edited) "I'm the mujahadeen and I'm makin' a scene. Now you gonna feel what the boom-boom means. It's like Tupac said: 'When I die I'm not dead.'" As someone who personally finds most big-screen comedies to be banal disappointments, I can say I loved this movie. It's hilarious. The characters are drawn beautifully (in the farcical style), the dialogue is razor-sharp and pitch-perfect, and the last half hour even allows for some poignancy that really works. The "four lions" are British-born Muslims, radicalized jihadis bent on a "real brilliant, bro'" suicide bombing mission. Their problem is that they can't quite agree on the proper target. The most extreme of the group--the only white anglo convert, Barry--thinks they should blow up a mosque, blame it on the infidels, and thus radicalize the frustratingly moderate Muslims. Omar, the closest thing to the sensible straight man of the group, is outraged by such lunacy. But his own plans keep getting harmed by his compassion and sense of principle. Even as farcical idiots, both personal and ideological differences are intelligently explored, and even some sympathy is evoked; not political sympathy (at all) but personal. Especially for the dim-witted Waj. But mostly, it's just hilarious. The funniest terrorist movie ever made! Barry: How often do you go to Mosque? Hasan: You know, when I can...most weeks...Friday prayers... Barry: Once a year is too often. The mosques have lost it, Brother. They're full of losers and spies. These are real bad times, bro.' Islam is cracking up. We've got women talking back. We've got people playing stringed instruments. It's the end of days. It's awesome. August1991 Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 (edited) It sounds like an indy version of American Dreamz. (Wait. How can there be an indy version of an MSM/Hugh Grant movie? That's an oxymoron.) Edited March 30, 2011 by August1991 Quote
bloodyminded Posted March 30, 2011 Author Report Posted March 30, 2011 It sounds like an indy version of American Dreamz. (Wait. How can there be an indy version of an MSM/Hugh Grant movie? That's an oxymoron.) I can't really say, as I haven't seen it. But looking at a quick review, it doesn't sound at all like it's a "version" of that movie.
