Pliny Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 But why should government be involved in protecting the weak from murder, or being sold into slavery if they don't need to protect them from anything else ? I have my devil's advocate pants on here. What else is their to protect them from? Themselves? Quote I want to be in the class that ensures the classless society remains classless.
Michael Hardner Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 What else is their to protect them from? Themselves? Maybe. If I decide to sell myself into slavery because my family needs the money, should the government decide that I'm wrong and disallow that ? Scotty Posted March 22, 2011 Author Report Posted March 22, 2011 Maybe. If I decide to sell myself into slavery because my family needs the money, should the government decide that I'm wrong and disallow that ? Doubt it. They let people work for Wal-Mart. Quote It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy

If I decide to sell myself into slavery because my family needs the money, should the government decide that I'm wrong and disallow that ? If you "sell" yourself into slavery you have obviously negotiated a contract. It is therefore not slavery. Slavery would be the forcing of labour without agreement and that would be considered criminal. If you regret having sold yourself into slavery you should perhaps have negotiated an escape clause. Indentured labour/Coolie labour is still slavery by another name. Oh, but they had contracts. Give me a break. Quote
