scribblet Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Anyone here from Mississauga? I've always thought highly of Mayor McCallion but this sheds some light on the issue of conflict of interest. I listened to Mike Bullard on CFRB now and then so was surprised to hear him going on about her, he doesn't like her at all. Eventually he was told by the brass to shut up about it (so he says). It seems he was right. I wonder if she will step down, and does this type of thing make a good reason for term limits for mayors ? http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/01/29/mccallion-inquiry-throws-mayor%E2%80%99s-reign-into-new-light/ Now, almost a decade later, that hotel is a faded dream, Mr. McCallion has landed in a financial quagmire, and a judicial inquiry is probing whether Mayor Hazel McCallion behaved unethically by wielding her considerable influence to further her son’s deal.On Monday, inquiry commissioner Douglas Cunningham will begin hearing lawyers’ closing submissions, and advance material already presents a scathing indictment of past city business dealings. The commissioner’s final report is expected to repudiate commonly held notions about the McCallion years. “No longer can anyone say with a straight face that Mississauga is some sort of utopia of good governance,” said Tom Urbaniak, a political scientist who has written a book about Ms. M cCallion’s tenure and travelled to Mississauga from his home in Cape Breton, N.S., to attend the inquiry. Molly Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) It'll be very, very interesting to read more, but honestly, so far it looks like Hurricane Hazel's reign has been marked with a higher level of integrity than almost any other municipal unit you can name. There has certain been less hanky-panky exposed there than folks seem to figure they know about in minicipalities in this vicinity. On with the repudiation and indictment... but I bet folks will still be comfortable voting for her. Edited February 1, 2011 by Molly Quote "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" — L.
