dre Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Very very cool. This guy is on a mission to get publically funded statistics on health and development released to the public. Kinda like the Julien Assange of Human Development information. This is just one of his short presentations but he does all kinds of work with HD data to make it easier to understand the patterns expressed. This is all done with GapMinder. It will probably change your view of the world a bit, and it shows how wrong it is to look at national averages or regional averages like most people do. Quote I question things because I am human. Shakeyhands Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 That was very cool, thanks for posting it. I'd like to see a further breakdown by country and region. I was also blown away by the huge dip during the spanish flu outbreak. Quote "They muddy the water, to make it seem deep." - Friedrich Nietzsche
waldo Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 I've previously referenced assorted TED Talks... in this one, Rosling again speaks to the power of statistics... the video is a bit longer, but the overall talk (and the flashy/inspirational finish) is worth the 20 minute investment in your time... (you'll note the short reference he offers to poverty versus CO2 emissions...) --- Hans Rosling's new insights on poverty... the seemingly impossible... is possible! and yes, about the power of statistics... and the Harper Conservatives hell bent position to gut Statistics Canada... to scrap the long-form census and abandon the integrity of data needed for effective policy-making and evidence-based decisions. Statistics... whaaa! Quote
