. Just look at the Chinese, they have a very long life ...

Chinese...

Life expectancy at birth:

total population: 74.51 years

country comparison to the world: 94

male: 72.54 years

female: 76.77 years (2010 est.)

Canada...

Life expectancy at birth:

total population: 81.29 years

country comparison to the world: 10

male: 78.72 years

female: 84 years (2010 est.)

Yes lets look at the Chinese, not living as long as Canadians they solve their geriatric care problems through attrition...

So let me get this straight, people on welfare, whon for what ever reason can't take carfe of themselves and rely on the state to take care of them, would be given the responsibility to take carfe of seniors?

Now I don't know how it goes for all, but my f-in-l is in a long term care facility, and no swiss sanitarium this, and his monthly bill is near $3500 per month (and that's out of the family pocket, not the states). And how exactly am I and the family supposed to have confidence that his meds are taken, his meals eaten and his backside cleaned when the care is to be given by someone either incapable of work or either too stupid or too lazy to work?

Well, first, I'm not suggesting they be given any responsibilty over teh truly sick. I'm talking about elderly people who have full control of their faculties, but just need some help with chores and such if they're going to stay at home. Maybe welfare workers could cook a few meals, take out the garbage, clean the house a little, do some laundry, cut the grass etc. Meds? I don't know. Maybe they could ask them, could check the supply. Not sure how many could be trusted for that, or the circumstances, but it could be looked into.

A lot of people on welfare have made poor decisions in their lives, and lack confidence. Single mothers in particular don't seem to even see themselves working in an office, say, and don't have a lot of education. They might not be the perfect minders or helpers for the elderly, but they'd be - properly screened - better than nothing. It would be cheaper than having all these elderly people go into institutions.

You've misunderstood--perhaps quite wilfully--Argus's suggestion, which was not an expansive treatise, but rather a door into a discussion.

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.

I know two women on welfare who do that already, for cash of course...and I assume there are plenty more, they advertise in the supermarkets on the bulletin boards as companions for the elderly. They do just what you wrote, help with the groceries, light chores etc..and pick up an extra $100 or so a week.

Of course neither of these women are incapable of working, they used to be kept women when they were younger, but into their late 50s their desirability as mistresses wained and they were left without normal job skills.
