capricorn Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 Canada has the best branding of any nation, knocking the United States off its perch on the top of the heap.FutureBrand's Country Brand Index put Canada up from last year's second-place spot to No. 1 on the back of a national push for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the Canadian Tourism Commission said in a statement. “Several years ago, (the) CTC set out to refresh Canada's tourism brand in anticipation of being on the world stage in 2010,” CTC president and CEO Michele McKenzie said in a statement. “We believed that – with the right strategy – a legacy of the (Olympic) Games could be more interest in Canada as a travel destination, and ultimately more visitors.” Canada has moved up the rankings steadily in the past few years, placing 12th in 2006, sixth in 2007 and second for the two previous years. http://www.canadianbusinessjournal.ca/business_news/canadian_business_news/05_11_canada_s_branding_best_in_the_world_10.html The Country Brand Index -- which assessed 102 countries -- is compiled by FutureBrand, a New York-based global consulting firm. It conducted a survey of 3,400 business and leisure travellers across five continents. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/business/Polar-bears-wine-make-Canada-the-No-1-brand--106819403.html But another survey -- the Nation Brands Index 2010 -- says the United States continues to have the world's most valuable country brand. It also held the No. 1 position in 2009.On that other survey Canada placed sixth, moving up to the spot that belonged to Italy in 2009. The Nation Brands Index measures the global image of 50 countries. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/business/Polar-bears-wine-make-Canada-the-No-1-brand--106819403.html Well done Canada. KeyStone Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 I can't imagine anytime that the US had the world's best brand - other than just after World War 2. As for Canada, our popularity is sinking fast, everywhere outside of Israel. I have to question the methodology involved. Perhaps as an environment to do business, but otherwise - it's quite absurd. Futurebrand either has its own agenda, or some very questionable methods. Quote

capricorn Posted November 7, 2010 Author Report Posted November 7, 2010 I can't imagine anytime that the US had the world's best brand - other than just after World War 2. You're probably not old enough to have been cognizant of events occurring just after WW2. You strike me more as a product of the flower generation (hippies) of the 60s. Either that or you were born too late. As for Canada, our popularity is sinking fast, everywhere outside of Israel. That's a rather silly statement, considering the fact that what this thread is about Canada's performance in the tourism sector. I have to question the methodology involved. Perhaps as an environment to do business, but otherwise - it's quite absurd. Well gee. Congratulations, you answered your own question. It is in fact about tourism which is a business industry. Futurebrand either has its own agenda, And your agenda is to downplay Canada being recognized for exemplary tourism initiatives and accomplishments. The esteem you display for your country is duly noted. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." Will Rogers

I feel so...Commodified? If we're lucky, any new tourists as a result of this worldwide ranking probably won't cross paths with you any time during their stay. With your attitude, that's to Canada's advantage. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." Will Rogers

Well...Beamsville is'nt such a tourist hotbed as you might think!!! Because the tourism industry, with its service sector employment(and commensurate wages),is going to save Ontario from the destruction of the industrial/manufacturing workforce global neoliberal economics has forced upon us... But you keep up the positive thinking and maybe you,and you alone, can will the province back to financial health... bloodyminded Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 And your agenda is to downplay Canada being recognized for exemplary tourism initiatives and accomplishments. The esteem you display for your country is duly noted. Jeez. So questioning the results and the language of professional marketers makes one insufficently patriotic? capricorn Posted November 7, 2010 Author Report Posted November 7, 2010 Because the tourism industry, with its service sector employment(and commensurate wages),is going to save Ontario from the destruction of the industrial/manufacturing workforce global neoliberal economics has forced upon us... But you keep up the positive thinking and maybe you,and you alone, can will the province back to financial health... I didn't mention Ontario anywhere. This country is not just about Ontario. The nations brands index provides some very interesting information on how well countries are faring in various sectors when compared to each other. The 2010 Nation Brands Index survey was conducted from July 7, 2010 to August 4, 2010 in 20 major developed and developing countries that play important and diverse roles in international relations, trade, and the flow of business, cultural, and tourism activities. The survey results are based on respondents’ ratings of 50 nations on questions in six categories: Exports, Governance, Culture, People, Tourism and Immigration/Investment. The Nation Brands Index 2010 overall ranking is based on the average of these six scores.“While top ranked nations remain to be developed countries and the BRIC countries continue to rank in the 20s, Brazil and China, boasting both economic power and increasing geopolitical clout, are the two countries that have shown some of the greatest NBISM score gains between 2009 and 2010,” adds Xiaoyan Zhao, senior vice president and director of the Nation Brands Index 2010 study at GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications. “The steady gains of developing economies suggest that the reputation gaps between the West and the East will continue to narrow”. For example, although Japan still holds the top position on the Exports dimension, China – the recently crowned second largest exporter in the world – has moved from 21st in the Nation Brands Index 2008 to 14th in 2010 on this dimension. http://nation-branding.info/2010/10/13/nation-brands-index-2010/ Canada's sixth place finish in the totality of categories, i.e. exports, governance, culture, people, tourism and immigration/investment, in a field of 50 countries is something we should be proud of. capricorn Posted November 7, 2010 Author Report Posted November 7, 2010 Really... Talk about well conditioned, misplaced nationalism... From where I was coming from, it's not about nationalism, not even about patriotism. Just old fashioned, uncomplicated pride in one's country. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. capricorn Posted November 7, 2010 Author Report Posted November 7, 2010 You keep telling youself that... You seem to think you know more about how I feel about Canada's ranking in the country branch index than I do. You trot out a term like "nationalism" when early on I clearly spoke of pride. Since you raised it, why don't you explain what is nationalistic about what I have posted? Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." Will Rogers
