Topaz Posted October 2, 2010 Report Posted October 2, 2010 I think its will probably are uglier in the talks with this government then QP in the House. The government is playing dirty and the unions knows this, playing each union against each other and now getting no where. The government will probably not settle thinking it could save money by a strike.....UNTIL Canadians can't get the service they need. The Tory party is known to be for business and not workers. I understand, when asked to help with Chatham-kent 13 month dispute with Navistar, both provincial and Federal said they would get involve with talks. Well, I'm told they haven't been talking, the union wants to the the company says no. They are making all their trucks in Mexico. So I think the PS strike could get real ugly. http://www.ottawacitizen.com/business/unions+condemn+Treasury+Board+tactics/3612820/story.html Quote

My own union is part of PSAC and as of Friday morning we have a tentative deal with the feds which the negotiating team has unanimously recommended the membership sign. The other large tables in PSAC are still negotiating but I haven't heard anything there which indicates they believe Treasury Board is bargaining in bad faith and we could see a tentative agreement by end of tomorrow. So it's unlikely there will be any large scale strikes. fellowtraveller Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 No problem if they all go on strike, there are plenty of unemployed Canadians who need the work. Quote The government should do something.
charter.rights Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 No problem if they all go on strike, there are plenty of unemployed Canadians who need the work. There are few that meet the minimum requirements, the bilingualism, the minority profile or the ability to dumb down enough to work for managers with half the intelligence of a bale of straw. Plus there are few Canadians willing to lower themselves to compete with immigrants and 1st generations for entry level jobs. Most think they deserve better. So a strike would cause a lot of problems. The public service workers are the only ones smart and numb enough to work those jobs.... The_Squid Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 No problem if they all go on strike, there are plenty of unemployed Canadians who need the work. We have anti-scab legislation in BC. No replacement workers allowed, at least not in this province. And how does an unemployed Canadian become a meat inspector overnight? Or a CoastGuard crewman? Or a water sampling technician? Or a Parks Canada employee doing wildlife studies in the parks? Most PS jobs take a significant amount of skills.... Quote
fellowtraveller Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 Most PS jobs take a significant amount of skills....Incorrect. The largest group of employees are in the CR category, clerical support. The typical qualification is high school graduation, and the 'skills' can and are learned easily on the job in short order. The immense boredom is offset by the excellent wages and benefits, and the occasional thrill of potential labour unrest where everybody gets to complain loudly for the injustice of having a great and secure job. But don't forget perquisites for being bilingual, being a visible minority, and the requirement to live in Ottawa or other major centre among "Liberals". Heck that disqualifies 90% of the Canadians before they even get an interview.
